Looking for a place in the bear zone(Pike, Letcher, Harlan counties) to hunt. Anybody on here have a place there or might know somebody that does, let me know. Would like to go and get away from the WMA and the crowd. Thanks for any help.
Kent I tried last year to find a place and had zero luck. I don't want to drive that far to hunt WMA because you know it is going to be crowded.
In actuallity crowded wouldn't be a bad thing if you could find a saddle or other funnel and let the other hunters push the bear to you.
In Pennsylvania the major technique is putting on drives. The mountains are covered in laurel bushes and the bear can get in there and hide. I've never seen a bear in bear season up there but I've seen several during deer season (the week before bear season). All of them except one sow with cubs was being pushed by hunters. There is one saddle I deer hunt. It connects 2 mountains and has steep 300-400 foot drops on both sides. Mid week in deer season one time I saw 4 bear travel that saddle as they were being pushed by deer drivers.
If I were going to hunt the season I'd get a topo of the WMA and then find the highest saddle or hogback ridge connecting two mountains. Get there very early and hike in with a treestand and stay all day. The bear will generally head as high as they can when people push them.
