I don't know what poll you're referring to, but the one the Pentagon did found that "70% of those surveyed felt that allowing gays to serve openly will have a positive, mixed or no effect on military readiness."

Of course, McCain and other Republicans are disputing the results, and they point to the fact that amongst combat troops, the number is a lot lower, which is a valid point to make.
I do think it's going to be repealed at some point, and should be. But I'm really starting to doubt it's going to happen in this session. In fact I kind of hope not; I certainly hope they don't prioritize that above making a decision about the expiration of the tax cuts. I'd rather see those get extended for everybody than for nobody, but that's a different thread...
