    Two bears taken in Kentucky

Despite cold weather and ice, there were two successful hunters, taking the first bears legally harvested in our lifetime in Kentucky. Look for the season to be moved up a little and other changes. It is going to be discussed at the March Commision meeting.

I don't have a link, I just looked at the telecheck numbers. I am trying to track down the people for a magzine article, but have had no luck so far.

Re: Two bears taken in Kentucky

I went on the first hunt in 2009. I got to Pike County and my friend's Dad took me out to where I would be hunting. There was a misty rain falling and temps were not too bad. I saw lots of sign. Well, before I left his house the snow began to fall. Giant, wet flakes. I went back to my friend's house and by 10:00 that night we had a few inches on the ground. You could hear trees snapping and crashing down on the mountain. My friend could not go with me but he lent me his 4-wheel-drive truck and put a chainsaw in the bed. I got to the road leading to my hunting area and that is when the work started. I cut several trees out of the way at various spots along the road. But then I came to a car blocking the way. I had to turn around and head to my secondary area. Of course it was the same deal there. I cut trees until I ran out of gas in the chainsaw and the truck was almost empty too. Unfortunately, the heavy snow caused a power outage and gas stations were closed until the power came on. I was able to get gas later that day. I went back out the next morning to where I wanted to go the first time. I got back to where the paved road ended and there it was; another tree blocking the road. I had enough of cutting trees so I walked in. I found a single track in the snow. I looked for more in the area but they must have all been covered. I never saw a bear. I was all primed to go this past season but then the weather got nasty and I expected it to be like the season before. Plus my friend said there was some sickness in his house. I did not want to get sick cause I was leaving for Florida with my kids the day after the season was over. So, I stayed home. Oh well. I hope with the season being a week earlier I will have better luck.
