Paul the transducer you have will work at high speed if you mount it in the proper spot away from turbulence and air bubbles and the prop. It should be able to get both high speed 2D readings as well as low speed SI readings and DI readings if mounted in the sweet spot. Although SI and DI readings are not going to happen at higher speeds no matter where you mount the transducer. You have to go slow and straight to get SI readings properly.
You could purchase a second 2D only transducer for the high speed depth readings only and use a cable and switch or gate thing to connect them both up to the Control head. The will both feed information to the control head and the control heads display can be switched to SI or 2D views then.
I can't remmber what Humminbird calls the switch thing but there is a technical name for it. Humminbird_Greg or the folks at Humminbird Tech Support will know the part numbers and prices.
Is there anyway you can run both the new 898 Humminbird control head and your old depth finder at the same time? IE is you old depth finder's transducer still mounted on your boat's transom? Might just use the old depth finder for high speed depth readings and then use the new SI 898 for looking at structure while going slow and straight at 4 mph.
My buddy has his 1197's transducer mounted on his aluminum boat in a way that gives him high speed readings as well as the SI readings.
Any tranducer in order to work right at high speed will have to be in the Laminar Flowing Water where there is not turbulence and air bubbles before it will work right.
