Those are nice fish, an for what ever reason the winter conditions, along with winter fish every part of the process takes a concentrated effort, you have the mental, physical an mechanical issues always in the forefront. Congrats U put it together

These are from my January First Fishing Trip.
We boated 11 on January 1, and 4 today. It was really, REALLY tough after the front, but it was still fun.
The first fish of the year was caught around 6:30AM in Holly Creek. It was not a keeper, so we didn't picture it, but I WISH we would have.

Great looking fish.
We were down there yesterday the 2nd....Had one smallmouth over 6, a smallie and largie that were 5 apiece, 2 smallies and a largie that were 4 apiece and a 15" smallmouth....took a ton more bites just couldnt get them to hang onto it
I'll be down this weekend. Leaving friday right after work.
Fly or Jig?
We were mostly Flyin, but I tried the jig and hoss fly too.
Thanks,
Geo
Hey Geo,
What depth on the fly was working for you guys.
Thanks in advance!
Fish Hard!
10/11 ft..........find GRASS.......LOTS of GRASS.
Mon Tue, Wed, we fished grass exclusively. Sat, Sun, we had a hard time in grass, but the fish we did catch were close or in it.
Later,
Geo
Thanks Geo!
Can you still see the grass? The only times I have ever really fished Dale have been in the winter and I have a hard time locating grass.
Fish Hard!
Most places you cannot see the grass, at least I cannot.......sometimes, but not most.
Get yourself a good Atlantic Map and look at the dark blue places on points and cuts. The more dark blue directly off the point/cut, the better chance there is grass.
I've been successful finding grass this way. After I find where there should be grass, I like to throw a jig or something to confirm it....THAT way you know.
Then fish the fly as shallow as you can until you find the grass edge, and then HANG ON............boom. By shallow, I don't mean a shorter leader, I mean throw past the edge of the grass, and drag the fly through it, off the edge.....
This pattern worked mon, tue, wed last week for us, but after the hard warm rain on Friday, we were really not able to use the same technique. We still fished grass, but I'm not sure we fished the "right" grass.

Geo
Thanks a lot Geo!
I'll give an update on the trip when I return.
