    Ditch the boat

During the winter I leave the boat at home. With the lakes down I walk the banks in search of fish. With the lower head waters the boat just spokes the fish. Be it walleye on the upper nolin or the crappie at rough I find it more productive to leave the boat at home. Try it you'll like it.

What depth on the bank are you finding these fish? Less than 6 inches I guess the bank has stratisfied by now and the turnover is complete. Are the fish flopping on the bank or are they already dead from lack of oxygen?

Fish are thriving in the upper headwaters. Depths vary from inches to feet. If you've never walked the banks this time of year you don't know what your missing. Fished rough today and slayed some nice croppies. The upper waters don't freeze and you'd be amazed at what you catch. boat would have spooked the fish away.

hey coombro, those guys are just messing with you. they know what you mean. I worked close to dale hollow this summer, and fished every chance I got from the bank. I never caught any size bass to brag about. did catch a few though. but like you said you never know what you'll catch. I caught the biggest bluegill of my life on a redeyed shad, at night. fishing from the bank, I had a lot of hang-ups and lost a bunch of baits. it's different working your bait up the bank, instead of down the bank. hey man, be carful on the banks. wear the life jacket, that water is as cold falling from a rock as from a boat.

Yeah bank fishing has it's advantages for sure. Easier to sneak in on a batch of croppies or a resting wallleye. Plus not hassling with the boat is kinda nice. You get to cold just head to the truck!

I like crankbaits too much to fish from the bank. A crankbait is useless if you are throwin out and draggin in and cant parallel the bank. However, I have indeed caught a few fish standin on the bank with a wacky rigged Yum Dinger.

Yeah i agree with you on the cranks from the banks. I to am big time belever of the parallel thing, but have caught to many fish by cranking it with the current or down into the current. caught nice brown last nite just letting it kinda ride in the current, however I was skunked tonite at wolf cr dam.

    Get a kayak.

I like bank fishing if I have only an hour of so. But if I have a few hours and I can, I pull out the kayak. I hate loosing expensive lures and with a kayak I have a better chance of retrieving them and you can still sneek up on fish.
