    computer issue

    I get on the net with my laptop at work thru their router, but for sometime now the speed has been very slow. I have a Dell mini card in the laptop, but not sure what the issue is. I can usually handle most computer problems, but this one has baffled me.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    have you cleaned out your cache ,checked history,is someone else operating off your wifi unknown to you. Cards do go bad run diect with cable if possible see if any faster,punt

    There are others on the router but they dont seem to complain, im the only one that is logged on when im there though. (If there is another person logged on I cant get online at all.)
    Just heard some negatives about the Dell mini card and wondered if that could be the culprit.
    Majority of the time its very slow and kicks me off, other times it seems ok. Ive cleaned/deleted alot of stuff including some old programs and still no difference.

    Best way to troubleshoot many probs is to go back and see what changed. Any new programs or apps installed? Is the windows firewall turned on? Have you changed your virus checking mechanisms? Many AV programs that protect from network intrusions etc have software shims that all your data gets filtered through. Assuming you're running XP, to check for network software shims do this:

    Start a command prompt.
    Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
    Type devmgmt.msc
    When the dev mgr console pops up click view at the top and click show hidden devices.
    Expand your network cards and look for miniport drivers associated with the NIC you're using.

    Also from a command prompt type ping www.google.com and see what the ping times are. Depending on you internet connection speed the 4 pings should average less than 100 milliseconds. If not talk to the network people.

    Many companies use filters such as Websense which can slow things down some.

    Many companies also use appliances to prioritize traffic and give business related stuff more bandwidth than surfing.

    There is a site i tryed the other night i saw on Tv speedtest.net I tryed it and it worked great...told me alot
