I have only fished Elkhorn once. It was last year, around June.
My suggestion would be to find where the creek is shallow and fish there. We tried to fish around a couple of the boat ramps, and it just seemed too muddy and it had too much traffic.
We went not 3-4 miles upstream, and found that the creek had changed all together. It was a rock-pebble bottom, pretty shallow in places with some spots waist-to-chest deep.
We had to ask permission from a homeowner that lived next to the creek for permission to park in their driveway and access the creek, and they let us without a problem, and were very friendly.
We caught hundreds of NICE rock bass on 4" purple worms, and several nice pumpkinseed bream. We also caught several small largemouth bass, but not the first smallmouth.
just wondering where are boat ramps for elkhorn. deep enough for a v bottom jon boat, and finaly are there any of them in central kyI have only fished Elkhorn once. It was last year, around June.

There are three boat ramps in Georgetown. Cardome is on 25, Great crossing is out 460 turn on 227 and its on the right, and there is one by the Arby's off the Bypass going into town.
Fished elkhorn once around the frankfort area. Most of the time I would go to Elkhorn to kayak the whitewater in the Frankfort area. Took canoe run around 4th of July caught 22 smallmouths. $ or 5 of them were 2lbs. and up. Caught them in like a 7 mile strech. Check with canoe ky. They will hook you up with info on elkhorn in Frankfort area. Believe it's canoeky.com
I plan too buy a new kayak from canoekentucky and they told me about Elkhorn. They will shuttle me free for a year if i buy from them. This will be a stop for riverbassin trail on 4/30.I will have a extra kayak if anyone wants too join in on the fun.I like fishing tournments but have decided too go green(gas getting too high)I think this is the way of the future(at least 4 me)Thanks for any help.

its been a while since i fished it, but always had luck with a medium sized torpedo in chrome. also did well using smoke and black flake tube jigs. i did all my fishing in the scott county parts of the creek.
I fish Elkhorn year round. Using Google maps in satellite mode or using Google Earth has helped me with finding access points to alot of fishing areas. If you like the action on Elkhorn, there are several other small creeks and rivers close that are good smallmouth fisheries as well. I have had better luck fishing the areas that don't get the pressure from Canoe Kentucky or around the public ramps but having a free shuttle would really be nice. Both kayaks and canoes work great and there are some good areas to wade fish as well. Be careful if you aren't familiar with the "low head" dams on the creek, they provide some good fishing areas but can be very dangerous. Another thing I learned is to always check the water level before you plan a trip, you can find the information online or give Canoe Kentucky a call.
As far as tackle go I use a lightweight spinning outfit. Grubs, jigs, lizards, worms, cranks, spinners and topwater lures in small sizes have all been productive for me. The creek has a variety of water conditions and fishing structure. For example around Georgetown the creek can be deep with slow moving water close to the public ramps, but then turn to fast moving water with good pools downstream toward the community of Switzer. If you want the better fishing that the creek is known for try to fish the swifter moving water and really concentrate on the riffles and pools above and below them.
I hope this helps you a little and if you have any questions I may be able to help you with p.m. me. One thing about the creek is never overlook the shallow water where you think a fish couldn't possibly be, I am always amazed when I pull a good fish out of water less than a foot deep. I have caught big bass from big water plenty of times, but to me there is nothing better than fighting a "big brown smallie" on light tackle in waste deep water on a small creek or river.
Look for access spots on switzer rd, moores mill, woodlake rd, but the best way to fish elkhorn is to drift for one spot to another in a two man. some very good sm fishing around scott franklin line, just get a rebel craw or a bitsy tube. also dont know if you can still fish by it but Jim beam factory is great caught a 4lbs sm there on a rebel craw couple years ago.
I have waded Elkhorn near the fish hatchery and done quite well. Looking forward to hitting it more often now that I have a kayak. Putting down a deposit on a Coosa Saturday so I will have two as well. We definitely need to get together this spring / summer and hit some flows.
