    Fuel stabilizer

I am fishing next Friday. I have never got out the boat when it is this cold. Should I add anything to the gas tank to stabilize the fuel in the cold? By the way, I have an Evinrude 48 that requires a 50:1 mix of oil in the gas.

If it was me I would still put it in, and add a gallon or two, to boost the octane also JMO

    Re: Fuel stabilizer

I would start it in the driveway with dog ears and let run to operating tempatures. May disconnect the gas line and pump (with the primer bulb) some of the gas out of the bottom of the tank before trying to start it. You can do this like a siphon if you can take the connector to the motor off the hose and just have an open end on the line. Better to start it the first ime for the year in the driveway than have problems in the ramp in the cold and the wet and maybe off the trailer etc. etc.

There may be some condensation in the tank that will settle to the bottom. Try not to move the boat around and stir it uo before you use the primer bulb to pull that out of the bottom.

My old boat I had to mix oil and gas as well. I would keep it low all winter and then when I went out in Feb I would top the tank off and get a bottle or carb cleaner and pour it in the tank to clean out the carbs. I never and still dont use Stabil. I never had a problem with mine she was just rough to start sometimes when it was super cold out but a few pumps of the bulb and she fired right up.

    Re: Fuel stabilizer

Most gas stations in Ky have ethanol fuel. I would run Marine Formula Stabil,Seafoam or Starton in every tank year round. In the off/winter season I would give it a storage dose. Ethanol fuel draws mositure faster, breaks down/phase seperates faster and is more corrosive to rubber gaskets and fuels lines than non ethanol fuel.

I run Marine Formula Stabil year round 1 oz to 10 gallons and 1 oz to 5 in the winter. I have seen what the effects of ethanol fuel going bad looks like...If it runs on gas and sits unused for prolonged periods I treat the fuel...chainsaw,weedeater,leaf blower, garden tiller,4 wheeler.

    Re: Fuel stabilizer

the question is, how long has it sat? if its only a few months, there should be no issue really, i know this, cause ive done it. never had any problems. after 6 months id say maybe be concerned. if you top the fuel off, then you should be fine. just dont go reaming across the lake wide open on the first tank
