Don't see anything replacing the clown pattern suspending Rogue at the top of my list right now, but I did catch some nice brown fish at C-land last year on a pink X-Rap. Oops, let that cat out of the bag!
I think to get your confidence up; stick with it, give it time. I am learning it is that way with about any bait. It is another tool in the toolbox. You won't become proficient until you practice with it awhile. Practice, become proficient and the bait will earn your confidence.
The next 45-60 days is the best jerkbait season, IMO. I've caught more big fish deadsticking jerks in March than any other month. The Smithwick (suspending) is at the top of my list. The new Spro McStick looks pretty awesome! Have never fished it though.
I like to thank everyone for the great information. I think I will leave all other baits at home on my next trip. Fishin.com rocks
I have taken a suspsending rogue and put suspend dot(s) on the front treble to make it point down slightly when you pause it... I have one bait like this and it just seems to work better than one out of the package.
Also, have done good on a Redfin... silver side or gold.... try it after the spawn, ie third or fourth week of May...Used it as more of a topwater than suspending like early spring
These were hard to beat, however the new ones a extremely prone to the bill breaking off - much easier than they should -especially for a $30 bait. The older ones were outstanding and tough, but I guess when they started mass production they lost some quality.
I am still partial to my slender pointers - I like the bigger sizes (100's). I get just as many bites on the bigger vs. the smaller ones, and I can cast them about double the distance.
Husky Jerks, Rogues, X-Raps for me. Central Open was won this weekend fishing a Rogue.
