    Quicksilver 2 cyl. Oil ?

I have heard from different people that mercury quicksilver 2 cyl. Oil is the best out there. Even on non-mercury motors. Can anyone tell me why this is or is there any truth to it. Its very expensive but are there advantages to using it. I run penzoil xlf with both my boat without issues. I sort of look at like most lower unit grease /oil---if you look at the bottle of most lwr unit specs are the same as auto rear ends 80w90. Specs on bottle are the same except for the ones that have synthectic additives. ?????????????????

I think its similar to Ford vehicles say you should use motorcraft oil. Which is also a Ford product. I DO use the quicksilver in my Mercury, only because that is what was used in it by the previous owners since the motor was brand new. I know it is more expensive than some others. I have been told before that as long as the bottle says TCW3 that its all the same. A buddy of mine & his Dad both have Skeeters & they only use Yamalube in there Yamaha. They claim it runs better. I don't know about that though. My cousin has a Johnson & they only use the Johnson oil in it, I am not sure what there reason is other than my Uncle used it in there.

To answer your question, I don't know if there is a difference or if it a preference, or confidence thing. Like Ford vs. Chevy thing. You know.

I dont know--as far as manufactuer would tell you they want you to use only thier product...of course. I work for a ford dealership and understand they want to sell thier own oil/filters etc. Still up in the air as fas as fluids but i can tell you that when it comes to like oil filters there is a difference. Watch what type oil filters you put on your vehicle...there are some very cheap/quality oil filters out there that in my mind would cause shorter engine life. Thanx for the input, jeff

Quicksilver is just THICK from my experiences with it. I've used it in a jet-ski and outboards, and man it just seems like it smokes so much! My triple carb Yamaha jet-ski smoked enough as it is with Pennzoil, but with the Quicksilver it was ridiculous!

I've been using Pennzoil for the last 10 years now in all my boats and jet skis.

Currently on sale as Bass Pro for $12.97 (reg. $22.99) - bought 6 gallons today. That should be enough for this season.

Re: Quicksilver 2 cyl. Oil ?

I used Quicksilver 2cyl oil in my old 90 hp Merc. Now that I have a 4 stroke I use Castrol 10w30. I switched to Castrol about 8 years ago in all of my motors. Has high reviews, I know several mechanics and they all agree use Castrol if you want the best.

I don't know if there is any difference in motor oils with same weights and specs. I feel comfortable with Castrol. I have never has a major engine failure due to any certain brand of oil.

I do know to CHANGE YOUR OIL and FLUIDS!!!! and in a 2cly "never" run to lean and avoid to rich.

The 90 hp I had had the oil injection pump. That sure makes gas oil mix easy. It just baffles me as to why so many people disconnect the oil pumps and hand mix fuel. I have owned many boats and the old 2 cyl that required mixing the gas in the tank were cumbersome. To much oil and smoke trail going down the lake or fouling a plug. To little and risk burnning a piston.

I have a completely trusted mechanic. He is the ONLY person I'll have work on engines for me. Over the years I've bought two boats that had blown engines and he did the rebuild for me.

He says DO NOT use Pennzoil. He says to only use the Merc oil regardless of who makes the engine.

There's nothing in it for him. He works out of a small garage and doesn't sell boats, oil or anything. All he does is repairs.

I trust him completely, and he says NO to Pennzoil.

    What's his logic on this?

If it's NMMA TCW-3 compliant, and marketed as meeting and or exceeding Mercury engine warranty requirements, then why not use it?

I've used it exclusively on 6 different engines over the years without issue....

nobody ever has any real logic, cause they dont really know. they just have some idea that they are right, but they truthfully cant tell you why cause they dont even have any facts to prove it.

Re: Quicksilver 2 cyl. Oil ?

Thanx for all the replys...i have been running penzoil xlf in my 2002 yamaha 150 for almost five years. Pulling tubers/skiers for hours at a time with no problems. I think ill keep using it and if i have a problem in the future cause of it ill let you all know but if it meets manufactuers spec's ill keep saving the money. Every penny counts ! I used to be able to go to the lake for the weekend for 150-200 dollars---now 350 dollars for a weekend ! Mainly because of gas prices ! Everybody have a fun and safe boating year ! Later jc

I don't know the logic. All I know is that I trust the guy completely, and he doesn't have anything to gain from it being as he doesn't sell anything. The ONLY thing he does is repairs.
