What species of sucker are you talking about and how were they catching them? Were people catching them on worms or were they snagging them? Probably there is a resident population in Drakes Creek. There are several species and some are in most streams in this area of KY, even very small streams.

Those are golden redhorse suckers. They are golden in color except for the red fins and tails. Some people call them "March Horse". In the spring their meat is firm and sweet. You can pressure can the meat which will dissolve the soft bones or put the meat in food processor on a fine setting chopping up the bones and turn them into patties like Salmon. Some places they smoke and pickle them as well.

Great smallmouth fishing down from the Barnes School Rd bridge (I think people from BG call it Woody Atkinson RD). Used to take a flat bottom down stream with a buddy when we were in high school. This was before the property on the north side was bought and the barrier put up right at the road. We were able to drive his truck right down a sand bar and slide the boat out of the back of the truck adn into the water.

I plan to float and camp along the entire length of the creek this summer. I have already kayaked a good portion in Simpson Co both above and below the dam. Just need to do from Salmons Black Jack downstream to Barren. Hopefully the high rollers around Olde Stone won't arrest my poor self going through there.
