Has anyone ever used browns Ford access ramp back in the river end of barren? If so give me some details on condition or if it even exists any help appreciated
It's a good ramp. At summer pool you can launch easily, at winter pool a small jon boat is about it. Right now the water is going to be fast and probably going to reach summer pool soon due to heavy rains.
Thanks for the help I'm fishing tournment down there the middle of April and wanna cut down on how much gas I use pre fishin I would say the lake will be plenty full by then thanks again
Drove to the Browns Ford Ramp today to satisfy my curosity. Water is out of the river banks and rising which means you could launch most boats, but water is very swift, muddy and everything you can imagine is coming downstream, trees, trash and general garbage. I saw two guys launch a jon boat who said they were going to see if the catfish were biting. Given the wind, water conditions, the current, and the trees, I would not launch there at this time. As I said I watched them launch and they did put on any life jackets. In my way of thinking, it was not one of the best decisions.
Yes the ramp does exist,If you have been far enough up stream buy boat you cant miss the ramp. My question is are you familiar with the area. If not please have insurance on your lower unit because it does not matter if it is summer pool or low water their is hazourds that are not shown on a map or GPS...with that being said you can run a few miles above the bridge at summer pool on plane "if" you run the right area.
X 2 what R19 said. The old road bed a quarter mile downstream can be a problem if the water is high and you do not know where it is.
Os so very true...the only blemish on my lower unit came from that road bed. The guy who I bought my boat from forgot to trim up idling over it and knocked a chuck out of the skeg about the size of your finger nail. I know a guy who was going to run to the right going up stream. When he got done his four blade prop was a three blade prop.
When the lake is a few feet below summer pool a lot of people get scary close to the big stump row just above the bridge. The one that scares me the most is the rock 8 ft tall in 10 ft of water at summer pool way up stream. Plus the 6ft tall rock in 7 ft of water. Both lay just one boat length to the right of center channel.
Never been that far been a ways past walnut that's as far as I've been I have heard the horror stories sounds like I may reconsider not to many tournments worth sinking your boat or tearing it up thanks for good info
Go now (well not now since it rained but now in a "normal" year) and you can visually see (the hazards are high and dry) stuff that can wreck your lower unit.
Don't go on plane on parts of the lake you are unfamiliar with, especially the upper end.
Browns ford is a good ramp with good parking (great parking if you park in the spots going up from the ramp), good lighting, and bathrooms.
As others have stated it is VERY dangerous up on that end of the lake.
The old bridge in the bend just down river from the ramp has sunk many a boat over the years, not to mention the lower units it has ruined.
When you get above the ramp it is not very safe at any level unless you know the river up there. I live near there and I wouldn't take a bass rig up there and I have boated and walked it all the way from there to KY-100 bridge and beyond over the years. It changes some every year due to the current. Large logs get caught up on things just under the surface and make it a gamble at best.
Do as you wish but make sure your insurance is paid up and wear your life jacket at ALL times.
