yes....depending on where you are going. You can get one at any DNR building. Paynetown at Monroe...the Patoka guys could tell you where to get one around there. Where are you going?

    Re: Launch permit

To fish Patoka and Monroe you need a Lake Permit afixed to the front side of your boat near the boat's numbers. That permit will allow you to launch from any ramp and be on those two lakes. I think that there are other lakes that require you to have the Lake Permit on your boat too.

I don't know what lake you intend to fish so I can't be more specific. Let us know what lakes you intend to fish and that will help us help you better.

Bluegrass Fish and Wildlife Area in Warrick County does NOT require you to have the Lake Permit. But these lakes are way down in the very Southern Tip of IN near Evansville, IN. You didn't say where you are from in your post.

Unless your boat is registered out of state then you might be able to get away with not having one. You'll just have to pay for a ramp fee for the day. It has been so long so I'm not exactly sure how it works. The permit allows you to use any DNR ramp in the state. It's only 20 bucks.

One day or all year you still need to have the lake permit on your boat. If you don't have it the CO's who patrol the lake can issue a ticket and you will have to pay a fine and or go to court in either Orange, Crawford, or Dubois County depending on what part of the lake they catch you on.

The patrol the lake and will look at each boat on the lake to see if they have a current lake Permit affixed to the front of the boat.

I guess you could chance it but it's only $20. If you want to enter the Newton Steward Part of the lake you will also have to pay a park entrance fee. That can be paid daily or you can buy a annual pass.

It's a bitch to have to pay so much to fish but that's life in IN these days.

You can fish the Lick Fork Area, the Walls Ramp area and not have to pay the park entrance fee. They only collect the park entrance fee when you go though the gate house at the Main Newton Stewart Entrance. That's the entrance to get to the fisherman's campground launch ramp, the North Ramp and the South Ramp.

You can also fish the Little Patoka River Creek and Painter Creek areas without paying the entrance fee.

But anywhere on the lake you fish or boat you will need to have the Lake Permit on your boat at all times.

If you plan on camping at the lake you will have to enter thought the main Newton Stewart Gate to reach the modern campground and the fisherman's camp ground. But there are several private camp grounds where you can stay too.

I agree $20 for 1 day is bad! But what the DNR used to do was target fishermen - set up on a ramp early in the morning and check launch stickers and sell them to everyone that didn't have them - then they would be gone by noon when the pleasure boaters would show up. Houseboats didn't have them . . . now everybody pays! If the DNR is on the water or shore they will be looking for that permit on your boat.
