    Bluegrass 3/3

I met up with big John from gander mountain today and we went to loon pit. Water temps were anywhere from 45-48.7 degrees. I caught two small bass on rattletraps. The water was actually a lot less stained than I expected. I also snagged a monster gizzard shad. Hopefully the water gets up into the low to mid 50's soon! Also the two I caught were fat little suckers. Looks like they were eating shad.

How do you keep the grass or slime algae off your plugs and hooks? It seems that when I fish these pits with any crank bait that the weeds foul the hooks all too often. A crank bait won't run straight when it's got lots of leafy pond weed hanging off the hooks.

I drove over to Bluegrass, Loon and Otter Pits along with Birddog pit and saw lots of people fishing Wed March 2 nd. But no one said that they caught anything.

Well. Can I tell you the weeds there this year will be out if control still because of the drought last year. We will see the same amount or more this year. One thing with grass and crankbaits is to know the depth of the grass and how deep the crank goes. 7-9th crankbait is most likely tested with 12 pound mono and a lower gear ratio reel. That's pretty much a industry standard from what I was told. So I use 10lb flouro which allows me to get down to about 10.5'. From there I use the position of the rod tip to control depth. Today I was ripping the tops of the grass with a rattletrap. For me that means a 7'6" gloomis deepflex crankbait rod. I want the rattletrap to get stuck in the tops of grass. Once I feel it get hung up I "rip it" which is basically setting the hook. Most of the time this will clear the hooks and once it pops free is when the strikes happen. If it gets unstuck and you feel grass on there still set the hook again until it's cleared. same thing with crankbaits. I'll take crankbaits and rattletraps getting stuck or banging off stuff any day over clean water with nothing to hit or get stuck on. As for the rod with ripping like this I like a lot of flex in the rod. It allows a much better snapping motion out of the bait once it pops free. Rattletraps I use a 7:1 gear ratio 99% of the time. Crankbaits I use a 5:1 90% of the time. Feel free to ask any more questions you have. So I guess the short answer is I love when there is crap on the hooks.

I think I'll have to take my boat to a welder and get it ready soon too. I drove over to bluegrass and took some photographs with my camera.

I found out about a Crappie Tournament that's going to be head at Patoka Lake's South Ramp this coming March 26th. I don't like to pay to fish tournaments because they usually are more expensive than what I want to pay. I'd pay 10 bucks or maybe 20 bucks but not much more than that to fish a tournament. I'm a misser on those things.

I hope that the weather is good this weekend. Paul if you find any good crappie spots let me know. I'll trade you a few of my spots for some of yours. LOL
