    Thumbs down pulling green?

wondering why they only pull green 7'instead of 11 or more like they do the rest of the lakes.we lose 2 or 3 weeks of fishing every spring because of floods and cant get on the ramps or in the campgrounds.i know the corp dont care about the fishing but what about the money they lose.Dennis has alot of equipment in the state dock parking lot for rebuilding the marina, how's he suppose to finish?

Its Not the money it is all about flood control. Right now flooding and high water down below the green river will keep them from pulling anything until the Rivers and stream crest.
But with rain 100% Wed. and 30% Thrus. with another 1"-1.5" it will be some time before they pull them down.

    Re: pulling green?

I'm not sure the level at which Ramp #1 becomes unusable at Green. Right now it is 11 feet over summer pool and I think that is more than enough to put the ramp under water. Unless that changes for the better, I will have to reschedule the USABassin March 12th tourney.

Bruce is planning to be out there Thursday. If he tells me that Ramp 1 is under water, I'll post here and on the USABassin site that the tournament has been moved and will post the new date.

John... when is the latest I can schedule that tournament to be in the 2011 season? Early August?

    Thanks!

Water is too high for ramp one, but I launched at state park no problem. Adair co. Ramp up butler creek looked launch ready though, not to mention the water back there was beautiful in color. Missed two large walleye, right at boat, no stingers! Didn't try bass, but again water was maybe 3' of visibility and 46 degrees. Will be back soon!

Newton nailed it on the head. The majority of TVA dams are flood control dams and EVERYTHING else is secondary.

They changed the amount of water they pull for winter pool and the date in which they start the main draw down. In the past winter pool was 664 and the main draw down started on October 15. The new winter pool is 668 and the main draw down is scheduled to start November 1. I cant remember the full name of the acency that got it changed but I am thinking they are called Nature Conservitory something?...anyways even if I cant remember their name they are the people who discovered a mussel a few miles down stream from the tail water discharge that is on the endangered species list.

In order to protect the endandgered mussel they recommend pulling water at a latter date so the newly hatched mussels have time to be more developed and can deal with current easier. Something that I do not understand is they also recommed that less water volume be pulled, but when they pull water they want it at a faster rate. Have you noticed in the last few years when they pull Green they no longer do a steady pull they open up the gate and let her roll.

The new way they pulll Green has been in effect for 4-5 years. I am telling you information as I remember it was told to me buy a person at the Corps of Engineers Office at Green River Lake...if you call the Corps office and get in contact with the right person about how they discharge water they will tell you the exact details about the mussell and the discharge of water.

Green is not a TVA dam. It and the majority of dams and resevoirs in KY are under the Corps of Engineers control.

Barren is pulled ~25 feet down. It seems to help some. Take a look on the corps' webpage and see how much area drains into GRL. Barren is ~940 square miles. That area, the watershed, typical rain events, and how much fill capacity GRL has at various drawdowns determines to what level they should drop the lake to in winter to deal with the inflow and plans for letting it go downstream.

It is disappointing that the parking lots flood on fairly regular basis. This speaks to the need to perhaps lower it more in winter.

The converse is also true. If you lower it that much it takes longer to fill. One year Barren never did hit summer pool.

BUT I would rather try and catch fish in a rising water situation than a falling one. Though if it is falling in the lake it is rising in the spillway, go try for a walleye!

    Re: pulling green?

The USA Bassin tournament that was scheduled for 12 March has been cancelled/rescheduled due to lake conditions. Ramp 1 is under water and will not be accessible for some time.

The new date is August 13th. It will blast off at safe light (around 6 AM EST) and weigh in will be at 2 PM EST.

Sorry for any inconvenience and I hope to see everyone at our (new) first tournament on April 9th.

    Thanks!
