    Crawdads as bait

Just out of interest, how many crawdad would you say was a good number to take as bait on a regular fishing session, say 4 hours or so?

Note I said "regular" so I'm looking for numbers where you would feel comfortable that you'd have enough to have a good day out, not a super day!

    Thanks for your input.

Guess you don't use them as bait, in which case ignore the question.

a dozen or two will work well for a good day fishing. Remember the more you have the harder it is to keep them alive. change the water often and they should be OK.

I haven't used live craws in a long time, but I would say two dozen should be a decent number, maybe 3 to be on the safe side. You don't wanna go out and run through 2 dozen and catch a bunch of fish and then run out....I usually keep them in a styrofoam box with damp sphagnum moss, this will keep them alive a looong time as long as you keep them cool...don't let them get hot in the sun.

Crayfish can actually breathe air, as long as their gills stay moist. An halfinch of water should be plenty. If you choose to use deep water, either keep it aerated or make sure there is something that they can climb out of the water onto to catch their breath. I used to study crayfish while attaining my aquatic wildlife management degree at EKU.
