I've noticed a problem with my motor not starting after we've been parked fishing for a while. Fishing a Ranger with a 175 Mercury. To me, it seems like the motor is flooded as in "pushing the key in the ignition to choke it" flooded. We have been taking the key out once we stop to fish and that seems to help (may be my imagination). Any ideas on what my problem may be? The bulb is tight and it seems to help to tilt the motor all the way up to get her going again.

2001 fuel injected
well...since its FI, pushing in the key does not choke it whatsoever. does it seem to smoke excessively when you do get it back going?
Yeah, it does. I haven't had it out this year yet so all the details are fuzzy. Always starts at the ramp fine, only problems I've had have come out on the lake after I've run to my spot and fished awhile.
I had a similar problem with my Merc EFI. and I would end up using the start flooded engine procedure. I read the manual trobleshooting section. The manual said to "not" advance the throttle at all when starting. On my older carb I would always advance the throttle when starting. I stopped advancing the trottle when starting and the problems cleared.
Hope this helps.
tune up? new filters, plugs, etc? has any of that been done recently? compression test?
