Is it always that nasty?

No. Most of the lakes up there are pretty clear most of the year.

I have never launched my boat in any of those lakes , but I have bank fished them a few times. Never caught a fish , again , I was very limited to where I could fish. And I would say normally the water is almost gin clear with alot of vegitation if memory serves me correctly.
