Lookin to buy a spinnerbait combo. What length rod and action do u prefer? What gear ratio on a reel do u prefer. Not much of a sb fan but willing to give it a try. Thanks for your help.

I'm not a fan of them either, but, they will catch fish. I've got 3 or 4 rigs i use. 1 is my crankbait rig, 7' med. With a 5.0 ratio reel. 2 of the other are bps graphite series, 7' mh with 6.2 ratio reels. The last one is a
6 1/2' mh with a 5.0 ratio, i use it if i'm casting to "objects" like timber, bushes, laydowns, where i'm not making a real long cast, but i need accuracy. I use the 5.0's mostly when i'm slow-rollin' deep, like at night.
I traded for a skeet reese rod, 7' worm-spinnerbait action this winter, it's pretty limber, and i'm hopin' it will work also.... Tr

    Re: spinner bait

When fishing open water or making long cast I like a 7' rod. When making short thows in tight areas I like a 6 or 6 1/2' rod. I awlays want my sipnner bait rod to be MH with a fast tip;as for the reel gear ratio I like 6:1

The reason I like the above mentioned set up, is because when using a spinner bait I want my rod to be stiff with a fast action tip so it takes up slack fast and drives the single hook home with some power/speed.

Thanks for the info. Bought a 7 foot skeet reese rod. Figured 90 bucks was better than buying an expensive one and not liking it. Didn't get a reel cause the place only had one left handed reel in stock. I prefer the revo's so i'll get 1 after work.

I wanted to get the verdict but my dad called last night to tell me the reel holder broke on a 23 inch striper yesterday.

I like a 6:2 to 6:4 ratio on the reel and a rod between 6'6" to 6'10" specifically made for spinnerbaits. These rods have the right tip action to pitch spinnerbaits with little effort and have good back bone. I have a old Allstar 6'8" spinnerbait rod from the early "90's" with a Revo Premier that I use.

I would not give up on it maybe he just got a bad one. I suggest the veritas I think it is the best rod out there for money.

    Re: spinner bait

As for the spinnerbait setup that is all in what you like to fish with. My personal fav is 6.6MH with 6:21 reel but you can do it with any size rod or speed reel. The beauty of the spinnerbait is you dont need a lot of fancy expensive sh*t to hook up, and your hookup ratio is about 90% which lets face it is better than any other thing your gonna throw. The spinnerbait is the greatest bait in the world but you have to know what colors to throw....

    Re: spinner bait

Hey I have The skeet spinnerbait last season. Liked it. The only thing was at first the rod felt soft and was alittle hard to control pin point cases, because of the softer tip. The 1/2 oz kvd tamdum colo blades and 3/4 wareagles felt mushy. But never had problems losing fish. I am using that rod for crankin w/ BPS extreme crankin reel this season and bought the new 7' veritas w/ mod tip for spinnerbait,w/ BPS small pro qualifer and so far so good! More control during cast and of the baits. Both rods are SUPERLITE for all day slingin' a blade and also great for lipless cranks and squarebills. Lots of luck.
