You didn't pay for elk restoration in Kentucky unless you are a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The only thing KDFWR provided was manpower and worked out cooperative landowner agreements.
WRONG even if all ky supplied was man power WHO paid their salaries!!!!!! KY hunters when they bought hunting and fishing license...... And what did the states get for their elk???? I think it may have been turkeys that I saw being shipped out west. Turkeys that the hunters won't have the chance to hunt . JUST LIKE THE ELK they are sending out. AND was the moratorium lifted on taking bovine across state lines ????? Once again we have EDUCATED IGNORANCE making calls in Frankfort. Same ones who keep saying the deer herd is what it used to be . PEOPLE who aren't out there in the field and NOT seeing what isn't there....

The smallmouth population at Dale is one of the greatest in the country, and they haven't taken the smallies out to help protect their brood stock in years past, so why do it now?....I'm by no means a biologist, but why fix something that isn't broke?....Man is trying to manipulate something he has no control over....Hell why not go ahead and clone the 6lbers so we can have a lake full of them?....Again, nature has a way of taking care of itsself, let it be

Okay, we do pay their salaries so I should have rephrased that, but the elk were given to us, I am 99% sure we didn't trade anything for them, but it doesn't matter if we did. The bottom line is we have gotten a lot of game thanks to the agreements with other states. Btw, Do you know how many states that we got deer and turkey from when we were trying to rebuild the population?

Fishin is Life, My best guess is that they are using the Dale smallies to reproduce and stock in Cumberland and Laurel. My opinion is it is a waste of time because Cumberland and Laurel are not Dale Hollow.

And for whoever asked, I doubt they would lie to TWRA because it would ba a management disaster IMO.

You are right Laurel is not Dale IT IS BETTER !!!!b the past 5 weekends if you don't have 22 plus pounds you don't even need to get your fish out to weigh. And I might be wrong but I Don't think they have stocked any dale smallies in Laurel or cumberland. Laurel don't need them I KNOW for a fact. Last weekend we had 23 .4 lbs and got 2nd to 24 lbs. In that event there was 13 boats and 6 had bags over 20lbs. Today we had 24 lbs ands won with a 6.50 and a 6.45 smallie .
As for trading for the elk I saw the show on ky afield and we did originally trade turkey AND pay for the transportation of the elk. Also thousands of dollars went to studies and MANPOWER to re-introduce them. As for deer MOST of the deer transplants came from western ky. 20 plus years ago. I remember when I was young if someone saw a deer in pulaski county it made the newspaper. If you found a track you took a pic to prove to people it was there

I believe the transportation of the elk was funded through RMEF, but I can't be certain without doing some diging in some old files I have around here. As for the deer, many came from out of state. I will also dig that out from an interview I did with the guy who was responsible for building the deer herd.

If you think that Laurel is better than Dale that is fine by me. I know this though, 10 of the top 25 largest smallmouths ever taken in the world came from Dale Hollow and zero of them came from Laurel. If you want to see the list just let me know.

Jbyrd, I started deer hunting in '72 and we hunted the Mt. Victory area. You are right on about not seeing any deer. Never saw one there until early '80 or so. But, it didn't matter. Every year on opening day it sounded like WWIII. I have to wonder what those people were shooting at.
Also, are you familiar with the burial site of a Lt. Nathan McLure? Back before some idiots defaced his marker you could read it. It said he was killed by Indians in 1788.

KDFW' s reply is nice. Should have been published earlier to keep the general public informed. They do good work with the resources they have available!!!

In the winter it is low but in the summer it's very, very high.
