Blood River Bust!

Well here's my report on the crappie fishing at Ky Lake.... I went down this past saturday with the intent of staying a week and hoping on slayin em. needless to say that didn't happen! our first day on blood river was met with a monsoon and one keeper in the boat. the second we managed 5 which seemed to be our average no better and trust me I tried everything outside Dynamite and gill nets! lol I did notice a trend though noone was catching fish! and the guides were having no luck either spider rigging for em. the bottom line is that the weather had the fish all jacked up and the fact that they had drawn the water level down by huge amounts also. the water temp being 52-53 was'nt helpin much either.
we got up wednesday to rain and forcasted rain through saturday so who knows when they'll turn on. we threw in the towel and went home wed. morning. Hopefully Taylorsville will kick off soon! Maybe next week will be the golden week so good luck to the peeps going down this weekend the ones we caught were in 11-12 ft of water and buried up in structure!

Taylorsville will never turn on!!! There aint no crappie in that mud hole!!! You would be better off going to rough or nolin!!!!

Blood river is a feast or famine fishery mostly famine,anywhere else one can generally do better,like back end of left bay behind moors.
Thats not just crappie its both crappie and bass I hate it if i draw a boat pard that wants to go to blood means a blank every time,or almost the ledges at entrance do produce at times.

Johnathan creek was no better nor any of the other so called hot spots, I just chose not to elaborate and did talk to several self proclaimed "local Pro's" that weren't fairing any better. =) its all a matter of timing!!!

Ok Mr.Donkey, yeah your right our mud hole prolly wont turn on! it gets to much pressure from the Louisville yuppies that arent smart enough to disconnect their boats from their trailers when they launch and keep everything they catch! LOL
I think I'll just sell my boat and buy my fish from K-Roger from now on just to avoid the wasted time, jet-ski's and morons that dont know what NO WAKE ZONE means!!!

Most of the fishing at ky lake has been spotty,crappie pn the main still deep 15 ft to 25,yet a few moving shallow including bass with eggs.Dunked a few minnows myself about same time no crappie but shellcrakers and bass on shiners in 6 ft of water,not a lot yet did get bit shallow,was back in a shallow westerly bay.
Again nothing to brag about 7 fish in 3 hrs,3 being bass(1 keeper released as eggs),3 shellcrakers,1 29 1/2 in catfish.
Difference is Im 30 miles south in Tn. Slow but coming.
Give Johnathon about two weeks it will be good.

Thats kinda what I figured, the water temp just isn't right on the north side yet. I did notice out on the main lake that the water temp was about a 2 degree difference warmer than the creeks/bays. Cudos to your report because its spot on as to how my own trip went. I may go back down for a weekend trip soon as the temps come back up. and thanks for the reply bud!

I just got back yesterday. The guys in the cabin next door seemed to have evidence it was starting to pick up. They had 17 on Wed. and 13 on Thur. We were all after Bass and it was a slow week for sure. I personally caught 4 keepers all week, and none of them added up to a pattern. Caught one on a main lake straight bank in 4 ft of water on a KVD square bill in Gizzard Shad. Second one (biggest of the week) on a black/blue jig in a laydown in 2 ft of water. Then caught two more slow rolling spinnerbaits on the main lake. My dad caught a few slow rolling a shad colored shad rap, and a slow rolled spinnerbait.

The interesting thing this year is that we ha only about 3-4 short fish between the two of us all week, and the drum didnt start hittin our crankbaits til at least wednesday. So I figure that all the fish are gonna start pickin up the next few days and into next week unless that next cold front throws em off again.

We were seeing the same water temperature and conditions as everyone else who has posted here. But the sun coming out on thursday did have teh backs of some of the bays over 55deg by the time we left.

As for Blood river being mostly famine, I would have to disagree. At least on bass. It is a place I can always go to catch a limit when I am having trouble catching fish. This week there was obviously NO catching a limit no matter where you went, but blood river was the area that got us our fish when we were desperate this week.

Dad did catch a nice trophy smallie on the LBL side on a craw color shad rap... we took pictures and let her go. Ill get em on here when i get a chance. She was freakin white as a ghost, probably came up from the deeps that day.

Finally, I would like to say I am a huge believer in the titanium spinnerbait now. I bought some of those terminators at the BPS sale and caught a drum that probably would have gone 10-12 pounds. I thought for sure that spinnerbaut was dead... but sure enough, popped off the ole kentucky redfish and that bait was straight as an arrow. Had a smaller drum swallow a KVD square bill head first leaving nothing but the back treble showing out of his mouth... never seen one inhale a crank that way.
