    Rough River 4/3/11

Took the boys to Rough this weekend to do a little crappie fishing and were greeted with the winds from 500 tornadoes so we broke out the crankbaits and spinnerbaits and went after the largemouth. We had good success fishing the secondary points in the creeks including a 6.2. they seemed to be holding right on the breaks. I recently lost my father at a young age of 60 and it really put my priorities in order to spend more time with my family. I have fished several tournaments in the past 10 years and I can honestly say that if my boys want to go fishing on a tournament weekend then I'm passing on the tournament and fishing with them from now on. No amount of prize money can compare to the comraderie of a father and his sons cutting up on the water and catching fish. No stress of getting to a spot first, constantly watching your time, angry over losing a fish or worrying if you have enough weight. Don't take anything for granted guys...

last year i backed down the ramp and my son jumped out, unloaded the boat and picked me up at the dock. he asked me where i wanted to go and i told him he was driving it was his decision, an hour later we had our limit of stripers, he was 14.
i dont know how old your sons are but i do know if you blink the next thing you know is they are unloading the boat.....

My son is 11. He fishes tournament with me. Some says it puts me at a small disadvantage, but he holds his own. Does better than me alot of times. He has the most patience of any 11 year old I have seen. As to where I don't & I'm 39. He will stand on that deck with me & match me flip for flip cast for cast for 8-10 or even 12 hours. I feel bad if he don't catch anything & he looks at me & says "Dad, thats why they call it fishing". There is no better partner that I can think of that I would rather fish with than Austin. I totally agree with stripernut. Before you know it they are unloading the boat, driving it, running the trolling motor (which I really enjoy, sit back & just fish). When I had the bass tracker I totally lost the driver seat if he was with me. I have a feeling the Nitro will be the same way in the near future. Enjoy them while they are young, just like the song says & Striper said "Don't Blink", cause they go from 3- 11 before you know it. Seems like just yesterday I was carrying him around & now he is finishing up elementary school & heading to middle school next year. Where does time go?

    Jason

BTW, I'm glad you all had such an awesome day on Rough. Congrats to you all.
