Trolling motor Question?

It looks like just the black outer cover was tore. Tape didn't work. If I tape it and put silicone on it and it still doesn't work I will have to get a new wire with transducer? The wire looks to be hard wired into the transducer, that's why I'm thiniking I'll have to replace both if silicone wont work. Does that sound right?

Yes you are right, the cable and transducer are made together.

You might try liquid electrical tape it might work. Probably worth trying it as a last resort. Good Luck.

if it is a humminbird trans, you can solder the wire. if its a complete cut it is difficult, you will have to solder the inner wire then take shrink hose (thin rubber coated wire cover that shrinks as you heat it) to separate the outer wire from grounding. repeat the same process to the outer shield. for good measure you could apply a small amount of silicone to the outer wire, slide the shrink hose around the silicone after it is set up and bond with the shrink hose. If you have an ohm meter you can check continuity between the wires, just curious- are you saying the unit will not power on? because on every unit i have seen you will still be able to power on, some will just go into display mode though.

ok, after re-reading the post i think i understand this is the factory trolling motor (multi-compatiable) transducer like you see on a minn kota and such. from reading i think i understand you have not tried the unit in the lake yet and have just noticed a cut place in the wire. just let some silicone set up on the area and try it out to see if works, if it does i would recommend following up with the heat shrink over the silicone. you can get it at radio shack, auto zone etc.

I scraped the side of the trolling motor on rocks and the cable to the transducer was nicked a little. I'm not seeing a gash in the wires just the outer coating. If the outer coating is pealed back a little does that make the unit malfunction?

You should not see any effect in the performance, well i take that back, from a technical standpoint you COULD see more interference from the trolling motor since insulation to the wire has been comprimised. Just re-insulate the wire like i mentioned earlier if you see or notice any interference. More than likely you will not have interference, but if it were mine i would heat shrink it anyway, just to have the protection there incase rocks get into the same place on the wire again. hope this helps.

You will have to get a new transducer if it stopped working after cutting the wire. Period. You cannot repair it.
