4-14 / Bluegrass FWA - Bird Dog Pit

Fished Bird dog pit at bluegrass Thursday afternoon , planned on trying some crawlers for redear . Found a spot by the beaver lodge that has deep water nearby but only caught some little reds - caught 4 crappie on a beetle spin plus 3 small bass and half a dozen small reds . Anyone out there crappie fishing and doing any good on the big slabs?

My truck is not running right and I can't fish right now until I get it fixed. And the boat motor's water pump needs a look see also. So I can't get out and fish again.

Wish some folks would post some pictures in here so I can get my crappie fishing fix online.

Anyone in here know anything about plugged up water pumps on a Johnson 35 HP 1978 motor? The water was not coming out steady from the Pee Hole and I had very hot water (steam) coming out of the exhaust port above the water a couple of times while towing another boat back to the lauch ramp. After I got done towing the other boat the motor started running much better and not getting hot. It got hot after I launched at the Shallow end of Loon Pit and I wonder if I got some much or weeds in the water cooling system when I backed out of the launch ramp (gravel/muck) area and out into the lake. Since one can't go over idle speed it's possible maybe that some dirt was clogging up the water cooling tube. I'm taking the boat in for a look see at the repair shop in a couple of weeks but I'd like to fish some before that. Perhaps I can just flush it out with some fresh water and a garden hose?

I had the water pump impeller replaced a few years ago back in 2003 so it's been about 8 years since the water pump was replaced. It's probably time to get a new water pump installed. There is always something that needs repaired when you own a boat or truck.

Yea I have an appointment to have it fixed in the next two weeks. Guess I'll miss another spring crappie run. Older boats take more time and work to keep up.

The good news is that I called and found out that my truck was fixed and will be ready by Monday.

At least it's been cold and raining a lot this weekend so I don't feel so bad not being able to fish.

This cold weather may make the crappie hold off on laying their eggs and keep them in the deeper waters for a while longer.

Where do you get your boat worked on and how much were you quoted on the water pump/impeller job.
Im having the same issue with my 79 evinrude 35hp. I plan on ordering the kit and changing it out myself next week unless I can find a shop that is reasonable.

I won't take it to Sibs anymore. They botched my carb overhaul job a few years back and would not stand behind their work. So I take my boat to East Side Marine. They may be a bit more expensive but they always do a good job and do the job right the first time. I've been using East Side Marine for over 30 years now. Luckily my boat doesn't require a lot of work.

I thought about doing the job myself but I have not done this before. I do have a manual that is suppose to tell me how it's done but those manuals don't tell you all the little tricks that you need to know. Now if I could watch someone do the job once and see how they do it then I would be more tempted to do it myself.

If all it needs is a new impeller I think I could do that easy enough. But if I have to replace the entire water pump housing and or anything else it could be more complicated. I did read about this a bit online and read where some guys complained about not getting a gomlet back in the right place and the water not flowing though the engine like it's suppose to. So that put me off a bit. Not knowing where the water pipe goes and where that gomlet is located gives me some pause.

I think that they can fix it for around $120 for replacing the water pump entirely. The kit cost somewhere around $35 to $40 bucks for just the impeller. Perhaps that include the water pump housing too. Not sure. I'll find out more after I take the boat in and let them look at it. They would not quote me over the phone. The $120 price above was what they charged me back in 2003 to replace the water pump.

theres not many tricks to it,but dont skimp and just put the impeller in it. get the whole thing changed. you have to take it all apart anyway, and the housing has just as much wear on it as the impeller does. as cheap as it is, why reuse old parts?

OK thanks for the good advice. Wish we have a forum in here for boat repairs. Sorry Bassmanic if I hijacked this thread. I can't go fishing until I get the boat fixed. After that's done I'll go back to posting fishing reports about Bluegrass.

I will say this. If you launch your boat at the South End of Loon be aware that it's very shallow down there even with the water up. There are weeds growing in this very shallow water. The bottom is a muck type and could possibly be the reason why my water pump system is messed up. I know it's not good on the propeller either.

I got the manual out today and read though the part about changing out the water pump. Doesn't look to be that hard. I may try to do it myself and just buy the parts for the job tomorrow.
