    Yamaha help

Have a 175 HPDI. Started and ran fine 3 times and then would not go over 3000 rpm. Took it to dealer they could not find anything wrong. With high water have not been able to run it again. Anyone have any ideas what the problem may have been so I can check it when I get to run it again? Thanks

take a compresion test this will tell you alot but you need to know what the comresion should be So call a dealer and ask if you get a manual By a dealer ship sevice manual don't buy climber type book there junk.. The service manual will have flow charts in it that will allow you to dignose you'r problem.
Realy need to know what year it is but if for some reason it was running lean or hot it will have a scared cylemder or a burnt piston.. A compresion test will tell you alot.. If you hit a stump or a rock it could be a sherd flywheel key. It's a prosses of elemanation you have to go through.
I hope your handy with the tools..

oxygen sensor may need replaced, can clean it but usually don't last long, may be going into overheat mode, does it feel like it's misfiring,if i'm not mistaken the one my uncle ran idled on 3 cyls.then the others fired at a certain rpm, may not be kicking in.could be a few things.may try the yamaha board on bass boat central.

I have the 3.1 Yamaha and it did the same thing. Replaced the oxygen sensor and that fixed mine. Jason

    Re: Yamaha help

Thanks guys. The dealer already did dyno, compression etc. Ran great for them so it's something that works sometimes and not others. I thought it might be an oil sensor or the cap on the oil tank under the cowling but i will try the oxygen sensor. Thanks for the response.

If it has an igniton switch you may want to give that a go. It could be a shorting out problem ..

Sounds exactly the way mine did. Would act up on me then take it to the dealer an would run fine. Finally after some lake time with the mechanic and he finally seen for himself changed the oxygen sensor and instant change. Make sure you run ring free it is expensive but cheaper than motor repairs. Jason

Father in law had a merc years ago did about the same thing. A mouse had chewed the insulation off of a wire and it kept shorting out.

Good deal Harry !!!! Yeah not just because he's my father but he does excellent work and for a very reasonable price as well. Good thing I get all my work for free hahahah. Just had him hook up my Humminbird 597 HD DI that I'm going to be using on the front of the boat. Can't wait to get out there and try it out.
