Where you at Don???? DJD is the man with the chatter...........
I can honestly say that I own a couple and have only thrown them a handful of times with minimal success. Of course, if you don't use them, they you won't catch anything with them....I just don't have any confidence with them. I like the concept behind them, but if you don't have confidence in something...you rarely succeed with it IMO.

Right now it is my go to bait, all white with white trailer. I fish it slow with paused jerks, that gives a lot of vibration off and then kind of acts like a jig. Try it like a jig, if that don't work try it like a jerk bait if that makes any sense.
I have pretty good success with it but I opt for a yamamoto twin tail trailer, I always use shad colored and as mentioned "Fish it slow", This bait is not a replacement for spinnerbait when it comes to open water but around grass, wood and brush it shines. The next time you are going to flip bushes try making the first pass with a chatterbait then bo back and flip. it comes thru the brush pretty darn well and most of the time right as you hit a limb/twig and it jumps up you will see a fish hit it.... just remember s...l...o...w!!!
I have had some luck on the chatterbait . . only in Spring and Fall.
In the Spring, I have caught bass during pre and post spawn periods . . with the better fish coming during post spawn . . these were hungary females after spawn on a feeding binge.
In the Fall, I have caught fish late Fall when they were forgeing for bait fish and loading up for the Winter.
This bait in my opinion seems to be seasonal or when they are actually in a active feeding period. The water in my opinion must be stained with a green tinge to it and the color bait I have had the best luck with has been white with silver blade.
I have fished the bait with no success in Summer period. In additiion I have never had any success in clear water, even using green or muted blades or natural frog look.
You will catch other species of fish; channel cats, white perch(drum) and crappie but once again, it is that time of year of feeding frenzies.
The way I fish this bait is with a "pulsating style" pulling gently with the rod tip as I keep the rod tip down at all times.
I fish with a lot of guys each year I do not know of many that have had a lot of love for the bait. As I said I have times that I have heretofore mentioned when I fish it.
Hope that someone finds some help from my past experiences.
This is a deadly bait on schooling fish...especially LM, Hybrids and Stripers here on Ky/Barkley. Blue Glimmer pattern with twin tail Yamamoto Blue Pearl trailer...rip fall like you would a rattle trap or other flat sided lipless crankbait. I don't throw the chatterbait brand....I throw the Slong's...much better vibration and better quality.
I dont own a chatterbait, but a guy I fish with some does ues one. He retrieves it just like he was slow rolling a spinner bait or fishing a square bill crank bait around heavy cover. I have see it catch fish, but no more than a spinner bait or crank bait. Until he puts a whipping on me regurlary, I will stick with my spinner bait and square bill crank bait...but yes the chatter bait does catch fish.
Regardless of what bait people throw, they must throw it with confidence that it will catch fish. The mental aspect of fishing is very underated. I had rather throw a bait that I am confident in even if "most" people consider another bait a better option...with that being said the chatter bait does not appeal to me so I never tried them. I do know they catch fish but I prefeer my "old school" regular baits.
Great responses. Thanks. With all this muddy water around just thought it might work real well if I knew how to fish it better!
i caught bass in a farm pond in november on a black and blue zman chatterbait with a black trailer i fished it like a spinnerbait just below the surface and i pounded em i caught 3 in the 4 pound range it was the first time i ever fished it and i quickly got some confidence in the bait and i went out and bought 2 more in different colors i fished carnico lake on april 22 of this year and caught one a white and chartrues pure poison
Oh and by the way I have found a black chatterbait to be absolutely deadly at night, I use the pro model because it has a bigger blade for night fishing but with all the vibration it puts out it is deadly.
