    deep cranking???????

I just bought some deep diving crank waits never really fished them before. The only cracking I've done is 10ft or less. Well I tried it sat. At gueist creek and within a 45min time span I missed 6 fish and two was good ones. I would have them on feel them fighting head shaking and then nothing. On shallow cranks you do like a sweep hook set. That's what I was doing and didn't work do i need to set the hook harder on deep diving cranks or any info will help thanks.

Really depends on your rod. You want a very limber rod with cranks. If your rod is too stiff it will pull the hooks more than setting them which will make you lose a fish. Crank baits are notorious for losing fish anyway, anything with a treble and weight gives the fish more freedom of movement to throw a lure.

I use the Gloomis Deep Flex MH 7'2" Cranking rod and it is great for those deep divers. Really limber top end with a stout backbone sets the hooks and the limber top end keeps them from pulling out.

The rod is the biggest piece of the puzzle when it comes to deep cranking.

A long length helps, since you tend to use a sweeping motion, and a long handle so you don't strain your wrist so bad.

    Re: deep cranking???????

I've tinkered with deeper cranking (8-15') and have figured out ways to keep more fish hooked up. Here's my 2 cents...

Like others have said, the rod is very important. About 3 years ago I went away from using the BPShops Crankin' Stick because I was losing too many fish. I started using a higher end rod (American Rodsmith is what I'm using now) and started putting more crankbait fish in the boat. Quality hooks are super important with deeper cranking as well. Replacing stock hooks with Sure Set Hooks is a good bet.

Here's something else to try... Don't set the hook when they eat it. Just keep reeling until you really feel the hook up, then give the rod a good sweep.

For deeper cranking, I like throwing 10-14 pound Sufix Crankin' Line. Rapala DT cranks and Bomber Fat Free Shads top my list.

    Re: deep cranking???????

I have one piece 7'-6" FIBERGLASS casting rods that were designed for walleye fishing that have worked well for my deep bass cranking. They have excellent backbone with a softer tip. Used with a Diawa and Abua Garcia 5500C reels with 5.6 ratio and 12 # test Trilene. Have lost very few with this setup. Also fishing muddy to murky water I use fire tiger or bright red color lures. My go to lure was a Bagley DB3, excellent vibration, ability to bounce off stumps and rocks. If I did hang up, I used a lure retreavor that hooks to your line, to get down and unhook that lure. This will definetly save you a few dollars in lost lures.
    Hope this helps!

Also remember, most of the time, with a big deep diver, your casting alot
longer, and you've got a lot more line out. I always try to reel, with the tip down, sometimes i'll put it 2'-3' in the water, when i get a hit, i sweep it with as long of a pull as i can get, and i reel fast, trying to take any slack, and stretch out of the line. Stay with it, i've had several days i've caught 2-3 over 4 lbs in less than an hr.

Flourocarbon... eliminate that line stretch all together. Use a good moderate action rod. I like 7'6" MH / moderate action for deep cranks.

I have a 7'6mh bps cracking stick are those rods any good. The guy at bps talked me out of getting the kvd cranking rod said the bps one was better.

Rods definatly make the differance in catching fish with deep cranks. I started playing around with them last year and had the same trouble with losing fish. I went with one of the skeet reese crankin' sticks and it helped me tremendously on my catch to loss ratio. Hang tough with it. I think you will really like them.

I would try a different color crankbait first. When you are throwing the color they want they will choke it. If that doesn't work then change your hooks. Go up one hook size.
