The great lakes have had awesome fishing at times, but it could all change quickly. If the asian carp take a foot hold it could be trouble. The fishing got good after they needed to stock coho salmon to control the alewives, then it went to chinook salmon, and steel head , brown trout, lakers and brook trout. The zebra mussels were a problem at first, but they cleaned the water up, and that helped promote weed growth. Freshwater drum began to harvest the mussels, and they are almopst a nusinance,Then here comes the white perch, edible but small. So then northern pike started to show up in some numbers, walleye were re stocked. At one time the yellow perch population was almsot wiped out by commercial fishermen in indiana, they are rebounding again. BUT congress wants to cut funding for some of the nusince programs. The other problem is access is being cut back by commercial building of condos and casinos. But for awhile it was a fishermens paradise, of course you needed a sturdy boat to fish it most times, and those lakes could get very dangerous in a hurry. As a kid we caught perch and ciscos and smelt from shore, now those fishing places are gone.
