National Fishing Week is coming up June 4-5 to help promote fishing for all!
Kentucky offers free fishing days for the first weekend in June. Anyone that just likes to get out and do some fishing can fish anywhere in Kentucky without purchasing any fishing license for residents or non-residents. All fishing regulations remain in effect for the weekend. Please pick up a Kentucky Fishing and Boating Guide at any License purchasing agent, store, or Bait shop.
For the people that don`t fish often, this is a great time to get out and take advantage of Kentucky`s number one sport! This is the time of year when a lot of fish are very active due to the springtime spawns. Crappie can still be caught near brush piles and bluegills are very active, especially near the banks, brush or rocky areas. Bluegills are soon to be bedding in June as well. Largemouth Bass are active and can be caught on a variety of baits, depending on what type of water you`re fishing. Catfish can also be caught early in June on Live bait.
When you pick up your copy of the Kentucky Fishing and Boating Guide, there are a lot of good things to read and learn about! The Trophy-Fish Master Angler Program is good to check out, and I think a lot of people aren`t aware of this program. There is a chart that informs you on all of Kentucky`s fish that have a minimum length to meet the eligible trophy status. For bluegill it is 10 inches and crappie it is 15 inches. For Largemouth Bass it`s 23 inches.
To receive the Master`s Award you must have 3 trophy fish awards. However, you can send in one if you catch a fish that meets the eligible length! For complete details of this Free Fishing Weekend or the Trophy Fish Program you can read about it in the Guide or call 1-800-858-1549 or on the Internet at fw.ky.gov. Remember, be safe, promote fishing and have fun! Please leave it as you found it and don`t litter!
