i got a 70 hp 1985 yamaha runs great with muffs on in drivway but put in lake and in barely freaking moves!!!!!! any help would be greatly appreciated. it starts and idles fine but when i hit the throttle it just putts and dies in the water.
I had the same thing happen to my evinrude. Replaced the powerpack and it ran fine.
just had the same problem with mine thought it was fuel problem replaced all lines cleaned carbs no help at all.... moved on and brought a spark tester for $10 found out i had no spark on one side all 3 cycl. was told it was power packs replaced and hooked up muffs and she fired right up put spark tester on and still had no firedid some switching around on the stator wires and found one wire was not producing enough put on a new startor and problem solved ..... but before replacing it i had called a local boat shop and talked to a mech. and told him what i had done and he said that in most cases that they start with the startor first then on to the power packs lol i did things backwards
so imho i would start with the startor since you can start it
Wondering if maybe you spun the hub. Unless it is only an engine problem.
Stators can get quite expensive. I had that problem a few years bask start up run just fine try to go and no luck. Dead in the water. Took can carb cleaner sprayed around motor and discovered I had small intake leak. Desperate and on the lake took some "form a gasket" dabbed a little on the area and to this day still runs like a top. That was some luck. Also had one cylinder had no fire went to buy $tator and mechanic told me he'd never sold a stater for my motor. Pulled fly wheel to get to stater and found broken wire. Wire nutted it back together put a little silicone on connection never had problem out of it again. Those were my scenarios and solved my problem. Hope it somthing simple.
Parts are to costly just to replace without knowning they are bad

Take a picture of your house. Print it. Tape it to the windshield, and a copy on the engine cowl. That should do it. Engine will think its at home.
