I did not read a transcript. I heard it live on the Mike and Mike Radio show. Pippen tried to backtrack or clarify what he was trying to say today on Twitter. Jordan's Best is BETTER than anybody else's best including Lebron. You need to read the entire transcript. He was comparing the all-around game of Lebron and the point he was making was a valid one, based on sheer talent alone. Not on what he has accomplished so far.
LeBron has led his team in scoring, rebounding and assists in 19 playoof games, that means he is literally carrying his team. Nobody has done that as many times as James has, not even Jordan.
I am not saying I agree with Pippen, but he has a good point.
BTW Woody, if we are going to play your game, how many titles did Jordan win without Pippen? He couldn't do it by himself either.
Yeah I think Pippen was trying to make it look like he played a bigger role than he really did in Jordan's preceived greatness.
Now don't get me wrong Pippen was really good and one of my all time favs but he proabably shouldn't have said what he said or at least worded it differently.
All I've got to say about the debate is three words that should put an end to it and they are: "The Jordans Rules"
When they start desgining D's and call them "The Lebron Rules" and he gets a few rings then maybe we can revisit this subject.
I believe the point he was trying to make is that Lebron can do things physically that nobody else could do. The guy is 6'9, strong as an ox and quick as lightning. He presents a huge matchup problem for opposing defenses and he can shut down anybody. Look what he did to Derek Rose in Estern Conference Finals. Rose couldn't do anything with James on him.
I agree with everything you are saying about Lebron's physical attributes but to be called or considered "The Greatest", then Mental attributes and Championship Rings have to be factored in the equation. Lebron has no rings, Jordan had most teams beat before they tipped off and with the game on the line NONE were better than MJ. Physically speaking, Lebron is certainly one of the if not the most gifted basketball player of all time. Shooting, scoring, ball handling, rebounding, passing and defending he has all the gifts. But no way in this world is he the Greatest Player of All Time. I would take MJ, Bird or Magic before James just to name 3 better than himI believe the point he was trying to make is that Lebron can do things physically that nobody else could do. I agree Elwood, and I think that was exactly the point that Pippen was making. That he had the potential to be better.I agree with everything you are saying about Lebron's physical attributes but to be called or considered "The Greatest", then Mental attributes and Championship Rings have to be factored in the equation. LeBron is an amazing player...
But I'll still take Michael every day of the week and twice on Sundays at this point. Heart, conviction, will to win...integrity...on top of freakish physical ability. Michael has the heart of a champion and the rings to prove it.
I think LeBron still has some milestones to achieve in his overall body of work before he can be considered as the greatest player of all time.
