If you can find one made from cotton or some other natural fiber you might be better off. The mono and nylon will break down over time and may not last very long. The sun causes lots of problems with nylon ropes, I do not see how nylon and mono nets would be much different.
i use mono, never tried nylon to say wich is better. i would assume nylon would be stronger. but in the river it will snag rocks and stuff so it may not last too long

I use Betts Old-Salt Monos at 8 foot in size. Strong, but if push comes to shove you can most times force pull it off a snag.
Not too expensive, and pretty tough and pretty good quality.
To keep it limber, grab a 5 gallon bucket, drop net in fill with water, and add a cup of fabric softner. Helps make the net easier to thro, easier to untangle, and it gets the "shad" stench out of it.

Betts is a good brand. If you have the bucks get one of theirs that is made out of pie shaped sections (sort of triangles) It will lay flat on the ground and open easier. 8' is a good size.
