Depending on whether or not you plan on using it primarily for fishing, Garmin or DeLorme are two brands I prefer for handheld units. DeLorme's will run Navionics maps if you plan on strictly using it on lakes/major rivers (suggest the PN-60 which retails for $299). Garmin also makes some good handhelds, but lake maps are as good as Navionics...and topo maps are more expensive. HOWEVER, they are somewhat easier to use (check out the Oregon 450 for a "stupid proof" unit). If you just want something to get you from point A to B, and not get lost, then the Garmin Venture HC is an excellent unit for the money.
