I didn't realize this move was going on. I did basic at Ft Knox back in 82' so I guess its just another thing that used to be...

Fort Knox was the home of Armor for 71 years until the colors of the School were cased officially moving it to Fort Benning on 10 June 2011. Several of the armor and cavalry training courses taught at Fort Knox have already moved to Fort Benning over the last year and are operational. The last class of Armor School trainees at Fort Knox is scheduled to graduate July 22.

I came to Knox for the first time in 1972 for a summer camp. Was back in 76-77, then 78-82, then 88-92 while in a green suit. Since 93, been on Knox as a contractor and civil servant. Totals is over 28 years at Knox in one capacity or another. Just ain't gonna be the same.

Above and beyond all things, being a tanker and around them, I've learned 3traits that makes a person successful in any circumstance: "AUDACITY, AUDACITY, AUDACITY".

Any idea why they moved the tanker training?? Is knox getting downsized or something?? Just curious why.

To combine the Armor and Infantry School, into a single "Center of Manuever Training". Only 2 elements that close with and kill bad guys, so combine the schools and train them all at the same place. Also means the training for the Infantry and Armor are more closely related as they mutually support on the battlefield, and the doctrine and tactics have to be well integrated.

Knox got the Army personnel managers (Human Resource Command). Call it 7500 full time folks, as opposed to the School whose students come and go evry 4-5 months.

Economically, its a gain to the local area, and the total post permanent population increases by about 5000 as a net gain after the school personnel are counted as a loss.

And to be selfish, as I live with in hearing range of tank live fire main gun ranges, my home value will go up, and I won't hear the windows rattle anymore when they shoot 120mm main guns in Jan-Feb cold nights.

Last reason, GA has east coast sea ports, and its closer to the gulf of mexico for deploymentshan Knox. GA also includes Fort Stewart, the Army's second largest Armor post, and Benning is one of its biggest Infantry posts.

Sounds like some pretty solid reasons. I never knew where the ranges were during basic since we pretty much just went where we were told. I would love to visit the base and see my old Disney barracks and training spots. Maybe one day....

Base just wondered when they switched from a POST to a Base, they also need to train armor in loose sand instead of the rough and hard pack ground in Europe that KY red clay turns to bricks in no time but sand can cause a real head ache for Armor, I know! 2 years Knox 3 on the used to be Russian Border for 3 and 5 at good old Ft. Polk, where gumbo cooked and could sink a tank in a moment! and then of course Ft. Irwin, home of not much and officers who needed to stick to video games. Oh well a heck of a lot of tradition is out the window!

Hey poppy, tanker here too. First, I think moving the Armor school to Benning will be beneficial to the infantry. I mean, somebody has to be an adult figure to them. Second, the Armor tradition lives on nowhere it trains from.
