I have to say smallmouth.
Tough one! Hybrid or Smallmouth get my vote, but there is some other tough fighting fish. This argument could go on for days!
Smallie or hybrid for sure.
Had to re-think this one as the ol' German brown defiantly deserves mentioning.
I'll throw my hat in the ring with the trout - they are a blast on light tackle. When it comes to 5 - 10 pound fish it's tough to beat a hybrid.
Coosa Spot, or a Smallmouth. Pound for pound is tough to compare....
A river or creek smallmouth in a bad mood are pretty mean. Hybrids are right up there as well. Here are a few more...
Have you ever caught a 4 or 5 foot shark? You had better man up when they make that initial 100 ft run!!!
A 4 to 7 pound Lake El Salto largemouth fights like no other! Their strength is impressive!
Caught several Lake Trout in Yukon, Canada. Took 28 minutes to land and 18 pounder. Great fighting fish for sure. The pike up there are really mean as well!
Smallmouth!
Hardest fighting= smallies........meanest (the original question)= pike
The Bluefish : When hooked, it'll leap, often consecutively. A feeding bluefish is fearless, fights to the end, and then considers your fingers for dessert.
If Bluefish came as big as Stripers... They'd EAT your boat!

Preparing for a tarpon hunt in a two weeks. I'm hoping to add that to the discussion list..Blues are bad, no doubt about it. Kings are up there too. One surfed me all the way from the back of an off shore boat all the way to the front, then circled the boat a few times. Captain said catch rate was around 40% We landed six of six, but it wasn't easy by any stretch.
hybrids without a doubt, best pound for pound fighters on KY waterways
