Ive never been to Cave Run before, How is the muskey fishing down there and is it worth the trip?
It is a bit late in the season to fish for them in Cave Run. Those who practice catch and release normally quit fishing for them when the water temps reach 80 degrees. We passed that mark a couple of weeks ago. They can be caught, but chances are they will die if released.
I caught a 40in and 25in the last two weekends while bass fishing. They seem to be more active this year than in the past because I have raised and caught more of them than ever before.
What are the best times of the year for getting muskey ?
Right now with the lake still up a little bit you can catch them shallow in the bushes. However, with the water temps up the mortality rate is pretty high, like RA said. The best times are Feb-May and then it slows in the summer until early October-December. In the spring downsize your baits, they love lipless cranks, small spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits early in the year. In the fall throw the biggest baits you've got like 3 OZ Grimm Reaper spinnerbaits, Magnum Bulldawgs, and big inline bucktails like the Bluegrass Beast. Cave Run muskies are almost always around grass, the Zilpo flats, Scotts Creek, and Beaver Creek are good areas to look. My favorite colors are White/Chartreuse and Black. If your throwing a spinner I've always had luck with Gold blades. In the heat of summer and the middle of winter alot of people troll deep baits (lil Earnies & Jakes) on break lines. Hope this helps.
