It's Blackberry Picking Time!!

LOL! I'll bring someone to distract him with a topless run he wouldn't shoot anything but pictures.

ah yes critters! My second wife[bless her soul]. was a 'mother earth" reader and subscriber."we are all gods creatures" was her battle cry. We will raise our food organicly, no pesticides, all healthy nutricious fare. We will compost, recycle, and not waste natures bounty.Now we lived in northern Indiana. top soil 2 ft thick, good black dirt, you could plant rubber bands and grow tires there.So we wuz gonna be retired,refined, farmers. Bought a 10 HP troybuilt tiller with attachments,she plotted out the available land,planned the crops, the orchard, the berry patch, the vinyard, it was her dream, she never grew anything except crab grass before, but THE BOOK, said we could do it.All the sudden the dream became realaty, I was offered a generous buyout, and in three weeks, we sold our houses, and moved to cumberland county"gods country". Something became apparent to me right away, we had one inch of top soil, and 10 ft of sticky hard clay, and tons of small rocks.I got the garden patch tilled during a warm winter, and planting time came.Yep we plant6ed taters, maters,onions, speragas, grapes, apples, peaches, pears, blue berrys, and her pride and joy strawberrys.The " critter" problem would be solved by growing one for them several for us, ect.That was one optimistic soul she was.The deer and racoons, and rabbits prospered,we did do some serious canning, but the fact that pests and critters were eating better than we were, finally dawned on us. Fences did not stop jap[anese beetles, corn worms, and tomato worms, plus other crawly things were slowly winning the battle, and then, I was ordered to eliminate, with extreme prejudece, these usurpers. Malathion, seven, round up, became our friends.The only thing remaining of that dream, is the farm plate on my truck!

I've got a thornless vine in the backyard - those berry aren't ready just yet, but they are starting to turn red. Definitely no chiggars where I've got them planted. I got wise on that years ago!

Well, I've managed to get 3 gallons of hybrid blackberries without getting one chigger. We have them planted in the fence row and mow on both sides; they are huge this year. Have had plenty of rain and that helped lots. We used lime on the lawn and around the berries to prevent ticks and chiggers and it has worked.

Oh, one other thing, I asked Sweetie Pie to pick them for me. lol Haven't seen him scratching in tight places either.

Blackberries reminds me of my mothers blackberry jam cake. Even though she was a staunch Baptist Christian women, she always found a jigger of Burbon to add to the receipt. Think she may have gotten that bit from dad! But man, was that some nice DESERT! (got to look through the family papers and see if I can find her receipt).

I have a Chef's Kitchen and it's always open. There are 54 cabinets, 16 electrical receptacles, an island and a bar and too many recessed ceiling lights to count. I need lots of bright light to see how to flute the pie crusts and fried fruit pies, and roll out those homemade cathead biscuits. A cleanup crew is always welcome to help wash the dishes. lol

Sweetie Pie is coming home Monday and I'm making him a special "Three Berry Cobbler" (blackberry, raspberry, and blueberry) and will serve it with a generous amount of French Vanilla ice cream. It's the kind of cobbler that will make you gain 5 pounds if you walk past it.

ANNA LOU’S BLACKBERRY COBBLER

Named for my late mother, this is a quick, simple, and immensely satisfying approach to baking a cobbler, and the good news is that it doesn’t involve the tedious work on making a crust. I baked one last night, and a big bowl, topped off with milk or ice cream, is tasty enough to bring tears of joy to a glass eye (yeah, I know, that is probably politically incorrect, but it’s a saying I heard throughout my boyhood and, besides, I don’t care a fig’s worth for political correctness).

1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 stick (1/4 cup) butter
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
2-4 cups of blackberries (use more or less according to how much crust you like)

Melt the stick of butter in a shallow, 9 x 13 inch baking pan, and then blend it with the milk and dry ingredients until thoroughly mixed. Pour into the baking pan and spread blackberries evenly. Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown.

BLACKBERRY SAUCE

2 cups blackberries
½ to ¾ cup sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Mix all the ingredients well and refrigerate for an hour or more. Allow sauce to come to room temperature before serving. Delicious served over a chocolate tart, cheesecake, or vanilla ice cream.

BLACKBERRY DUMPLINGS

1 quart blackberries
1 cup of sugar (or to taste)
Enough water to make berries thin enough to cook dumplings

DUMPLINGS

1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup milk

Place blackberries, sugar and water in saucepan and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, mix dumpling ingredients thoroughly and drop by tablespoons into boiling berries. Cook for 15 minutes or until dumplings are cooked through the center. Serve hot with cream.

BLACKBERRY SORBET

2 ½ cups boiling water
1 regular size tea bag
3 cups fresh blackberries
1 ¼ cups sugar
¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1 ½ lemons)

Pour boiling water over tea bag and steep for 10 minutes. Mix blackberries with sugar. Add tea to the berries; crush berries with the back of a large spoon to release juices. Cover and cool. Puree berry/tea mixture in food processor using a metal blade. Strain through a fine sieve. Add lemon juice and mix. Refrigerate for at least an hour. Place sorbet mixture in ice cream maker and process as you would ice cream. Freeze sorbet overnight to allow flavors to develop. Makes one quart (recipe ingredients can be doubled to make more).
