Talking I caught bait with my cast net!!

Met my fishing partner, Knute (the heathen) at the New Albany,IN ramp at 1600 hours and off we went to Doug Meyer's not so secret place to throw the net.

I caught 3 shad and 2 skipjacks on the first throw. Caught some more on a couple more throws then Knute (the heathen) wanted to try. Unless he plans on knocking the bait unconscious with the lead line, he's not going to catch anything with the way he throws a net.

We went on up below the hydros and anchored. I fished for cats while Knute (the heathen) cast swim baits and pop'r type lures for the whites.

My first 4 inch live whole shad wasn't in the water for 5 minutes when I hooked and landed a nice 15lb blue. I let that one back but kept some other smaller ones that I caught on cut skipjack.

The afternoon, early evening thunder storm that I didn't see on any forecasts showed up and knocked us off the water early. I can brave a small shower, but thunder and lightning was starting to crash and we left.

I remembered to put in the drain plug and take off the transom straps. I pre-started the motor in my driveway so Knute (the heathen) could start the motor when we launched. That does seem to help him starting my motor.

Hurricanebob: I attempted your method of fabric softener with my net with a slight twist. Mrs. Tyme didn't have any liquid softener so I layed the net on the ground and placed 3 dryer sheets on top of the net. For some reason, that didn't seem to help.

I got my net out yesterday on T-ville. I did about as well as I ever do....in 10 casts I'll get 2-3 perfect pancakes, 4-5 that open halfway, and the rest just don't do squat. Tell ya what, it doesn't take long to get tired or wet from throwing them things.

My bad. It really doesn't do anything benficial for the net. It just makes the net and your boat smell real good so you can talk people into going fishing with you. It has always worked for me. I get to meet some really nice men this way. Next week, I'll discuss the benefits of a tackle box that includes "reel lube".

    Till then......ta-ta!

On the Kentucky River the shad school up. They look like a dark cloud just under the surface of the water. I troll over to the cloud and they all dive when you get close. I throw the net where the cloud was and they are usually in the same spot but deeper. When I bring the net up I usually have anywhere from 50 to 75 shad in the net.

One throw gives me the bait I need. The hard part is keeping them alive. The last maybe two hours in the well.

In 1980 I took my first trip to the gulf, saw my first cast net, watched those guys throw nets that nee3ded to be 20ft around, and catch mullet. One of those cajuns had the patience to teach me how to throw a net, albeit a much smaller one. Went home and when the smelt season started, used the net, it amazed the locals, we mostly used gill nets then, had a bucket full in about 3 hours.A couple of years later, got the net out again, and couldn't throw it, in fact till this day I cant throw it, even when the guy who owned the bait shop on hy127 near cumberland showed me how, couldn't do it.I dont even try anymore, even left two nets behind when I moved to glasgow.

Bob or Tyme, can either of you spread some of that good smelling stuff on onemorecast before he gets on the river? It would have to be an improvement.

The net is soaking as I post. Just added the Downey or whatever brand to a bucket of water. I can already tell the net is going to smell a whole lot better.

I just may put some of this stuff in a spray bottle to ward off the "Eau de Doug" smell when I fish with him next time.

I had always wanted to meet and fish with HurricaneBob but now I'm not so sure. I may have to "take a friend" so I don't have to experience the benefits of "reel lube." I'm reminded of Ned Beatty in "Deliverance." Oink, oink.

I was gonna try the dryer sheets, but Doug wouldn't fit in a Maytag.
