bass behavior?

what do you think a bass will do after you weigh it in at a tournament and then release them back at the ramp. do you think the migrate back towards home territory or do you think they stay close and make a new home on acceptable cover/structure. thanks for the opinions.

Make new home....Look for the 1st drop nearest the release site at weigh-in

Interesting topic. I have to think they stay close to where they are released.

I am a member of a semi-private lake (about 65 acres). Over the course of about 6 years, me and my buddy caught, measured, weighed, tagged and released over 150 bass between 12" and 8 pounds. Several of those fish were caught and released again through the years. This is what we found... Their growth rate was about a half pound per year. Also, the fish we caught again were always in the same general area. For example, they would be caught 2 years later, 100 feet down the same bank.

I read a study done on smallmouths using telemetry and most returned back to their home range. I suspect that is typical of largemouth as well.

I always wondered this too. Thanks for sharing Tim. I wonder how that would be on a lake like KY. Lake though? Some of those fish get carried over 50 miles.

I've also wondered about this. The other two things I wonder about is how far they would travel in a typical day. I also wonder how long it actually takes them before they will hit another lure.

I read an article about a study they did in Texas on this....They tagged the fish with a tracking device and best I can remember they said the fish was in the same area it was caught some 20 miles away within a short amount of time...I can't remember the specifics on the article but will look and see if I can find it

If they stayed in the local area where released, you would be able to walk on their backs all the way to the moon by now around Ky Dam Marina and Paris Landing Marina.

i have a place back in the marina at the state dock in rough river and we always do better after a big tournament weighs in within the week. so i would say they atleast stick around for a little bit.
