i havent done an actual tournament-tournament ( you know what i mean) so i wasnwondering what tips you could give me. this is on greenbo lake, but you dont necessarly need to give me tips on that. it would be awesome though.
Pre-fish. then find a pattern. get there the day of see what has changed- be able to adapt quickly and be willing to make a change- again find the pattern.
You'll get better answers if you could give us the following:
Are you boater or Co-Angler (back of the boat)
What type of fish (Bass Crappie etc..)
What style do you prefer ie. Wormer, Cranker etc...
What type of tournament, draw or partner/Buddy
A back of the boat guy in some tournaments gets a rough way to go in some instances and need to be able to adapt to fishing a different way than the front of the boat guy so these things may/will help.....
boater, wormer, (not really a cranker), partner
the tourneys i fish is crappie/bass only
The best back of the boat lures on the FLW trail is the shakey head and a senko. Rig a 3/16 oz shakey style jig head on a spinning rod (my choice of combo's for this) and get a bag of watermelon candy Net Baits T-Mac's to rig on them.
This set up has caught fish for me almost everywhere I go, I sometimes alternate using a baby paca craw or a zoom trick worm depending on where I'm fishing. Higher winds I tie on a 1/4 oz or if I am using a baitcaster. Just drag and concentrate on the feel of the bait hitting each rock, twig or anything. I pop the paca's a few times but not too high just a foot or so off the bottom.
Other baits that will produce is a 3/8oz to 1/2 oz jig with a baby paca craw on it try to find peanut butter and jelly colors! First thing in the morning throw a popper till the sun gets high then resort to slower baits especially in this heat - hope I helped
Greenbo fishes like a pond or small lake much more than a big lake. Its ultraclear and different than most lakes so you need to fish it different. I have won a few tournaments on Greenbo but I dont fish it anymore. If your fishing at night I have done well on texas rigged 6in worms. Fish around wood cover. I have also done well at night fishing swimming jigs around the grassy banks with the water willows. During the daytime the key is to downsize. Early in the morning or late in the evening and low light conditions such as a rainy or really cloudy day you can catch bass on a few different baits but otherwise you better off with softplasics and light line. If it is lowlight and fish are active try a small topwater. I have done really well on a Senko on Greenbo. The fish seem to suspend alot on Greenbo probably because the main forage is baitfish. I love a shakey head but havent done as well on one as I have with a senko. I would use a 4in senko until you get a limit then go to a 5in. My second choice would be a drop shot. And dont pass a bever hut they are the best cover on Greenbo. With laydowns being a close second. The biggest bass in the lake seem to suspend around laydowns and are difficult to catch.
