    Fishing with jigs.

Never fished with a jig before and picked one up today. I had one fish on but ran into a tree and hung me up. My main question is any tips for using a jig like retrieval wise I think that's what is giving me the most problem. Also any trips for rigging up trick worms do you use them the same as a normal texas rig or do they use their own type of rig?

When you thinking you are fishing too slow slow down even more. Just walk it along the bottom hopping it up a few times, at least that's what I do, I don't use trick worms so no info on that from me

The retrieve you used worked. The fish won. I love a jig year around. Change the retrieve often to find what they want. When a fish hits, remember that. A trick worm is nothing more than a hook and a worm. A Texas rig is in it's own category. Whether it's free or

The best thing to do is to find out what the technique the fish are biting. Sometimes you need to drag the jig on the bottom, sometimes you need to hop the jigs off the bottom and if there is alot of grass you can rip thje jig and could cause a reaction bite. There is nothing like feeling that big THUMP on the end of your line. A jig is a great lure for big fish... Goodluck

On the retrieve side of it....... use heavy tackle! 65 lb braid or 17 to 20 pound mono or flou. set the hook hard and get him to the surface quik! jig fishin can be sooo much fun. make sure to watch your line as it falls. most of your hits on a jig are on the fall and alot of fishermen dont even feel it!

    Re: Fishing with jigs.

I started jig fishing with confidence about 20 years ago. Here's my 2 cents...

Use a 6'6" - 7'6" MH baitcasting rod. Whatever feels most comfortable to you. I prefer a 6'6" and 7'. Regarding the reel, use a high speed reel. You'll need this to help yank bass out of cover. My line preference for jigs: 15# Trilene Big Game, 15-20# Bass Pro Shops XPS Flourocarbon and 40# Power Pro Braid. I only use the braid when fishing heavy cover, stained water and deeper structure. Braid is awesome when you're probing a jig in 10+ ft of water. You feel everything you're fishing!

As for jig styles, I keep it pretty simple. A 1/4 - 1/2 oz arkie style jig gets the job done in most situations. I've also caught a pile of fish on Booza Bug jigs. See http://stansloanzorrobaitco.com/flippin.php ... Buy the heads, powder paint and add a skirt to save $$$.

Experiment with retrieve. The last time I caught them on a jig (2 wks ago) I was dragging it more than hopping it... Also remember, some days they want a rattle and some days they don't. It's all trial and error.

If I had the fish one bait for the rest of my like it would be a jig.

Keep fishing the jig and stick with it (year round)! You'll catch some bigguns on it!
