    Same question-more detail

    How often and when do:

    Gizzards
    treadin
    alewives

    ...spawn

How does water level moving up and or down affect a spawn.

Been curious about that with the abundance of certain bait some years and lack there of others.

I just found this new site that looks pretty interesting, but I don't know if it really works...It seems like local weather patterns, especially cold fronts affect the fish bite more than the moon phase.

    Hello,

Yes, it is a vital factor alongside barometric pressure (sinking is best in my experience, but rising can trigger feeding as well). The barometer is usually an indicator of front activity. Any time the weather is shifting, you will notice a shift in the feeding cycles of all wildlife.

I used to work in the law enforcement and later the medical field, and there would always be increased activity in humans during strong front or lunar cycles (especially full or new moons), as well.

I used to keep track of all this with the Old Farmer's Almanac and a homemade barometer.

Recently, I do have a desktop app that tells me the lunar cycles (new moon tonight, fluctuating barometer, fishing!), but I've also come to depend on wildlife.

I hunt more small game than I used to. Deer got boring to shoot so I switched to rabbit and squirrel, which I feel give more hunting challenges.

Their feeding habits directly coincide with weather -- you will see squirrel running all over the place gathering food, for instance, before a big storm.

Additionally, have you ever had a day when you just wanted to eat and eat and eat, and you felt lethargic and lazy? These are the same indicators working on you! Get out and fish on these days!

I built a website to sell gun sights, and I'm thinking about building another one to give daily fishing forecasts taking into account all the above. It's really a simple thing, but it's also becoming an increasingly lost art.

    Josh
