    hello from sunny florida !

hang on ive got to close the door i cant hear for the waves crashing on the beach....whew, thats better.
fished the pier on sunday and caught all kinds of stuff .....i dont know what most of them were but one was a nice king mackerel....real string stretcher, 44 inches.
went 30 miles out on monday bottom fishing, brought 37 assorted snappers, triggerfish and red grouper, miss stripernut caught the biggest red grouper of the day a 16 pounder.
going again thursday, friday and saturday, sore arms , sunburned bald head, plenty of oysters and ice cold yellow pop.....lifes good !

wish everyone on fishin.com were here !!!

Look for me 30 miles out Thursday. I'll be in the 17" Sea Nymph with my 2' hydro glow light and the american flag flaggind down the coast guard for refreshments.

haha peter i will be looking for you
we are in panama city beach, fishing here for the week and going out of destin on saturday.
trying real hard to get on as mate on one of the boats, if it works out mama stripernut will come home and handle all the logistical stuff like selling the house and all that inconvenient stuff.

saw a boat come in today with a king mackerel head !!!! barracuda cut it off as slick as if you would have taken a filet knife and cut it , scary stuff. this was a big king too !

Hey stripernut,im going to panama city beach aug 7-12 and wanted to do some peir fishing which i have never done before. Could you please tell me what some of the best baits to fish with are and do you drop bait straight down or cast out farther away from the peir. Also how you rig your pole ? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance,jc

i try to catch alewives or "hardtails" on sabiki rigs (you can buy them at walmart for $3, just drop them straight off the pier to the bottom and set the hook, they will be there) take the live baitfish off the sabiki rig and put it on a larger reel with a "king mackerel steel leader rig" , available at walmart or the pier for $3, drop or "lob" the live bait without any weight and let it swim downcurrent of the pier on the surface, if a king hits hit him back. i use 60lb braid on a shakespeare tiger stik with a okuma avenger baitfeeder. if you want to try for spanish mackerel its hard to beat a "gotcha" plug, available anywhere on the coast.
that pretty much wraps up my limited knowledge, my suggestion would be to watch the locals, they catch alot more than i do

Try cutting each of the forked tail parts off at the base where they meet with wire cutters. The hardtail will vibrate like a bumble bee with out those tail parts.

Re: hello from sunny florida !

Just recently got back from the gulf coast and wishing I were still there! We did a tarpon trip in the Apalachicola river with a guide that specializes in the river stripers in the cooler months. I had six on and my brother had a 125 #er six feet in the air before the unbutton.

Let me know if you are interested and I can hook you two up. It would be about an hour's drive east for you. Dave is a real cool guy and the tarpon was probably once in a life time for me but I hope not..

The guy can talk stripers all day if you let him..

thanks duayne, tarpon are bad dudes!! they will kick your butt....if they stay hooked up lol. i appreciate the offer for the guides name, i have an uncle that lives in miami and he is a flats guide in the everglades national park, ive been with him several times over the years, and i have NEVER got a big tarpon in the dang boat ! got some small ones on live bait, but lost all the big ones on a flyrod and a plug rod....i hate em ! lol

Re: hello from sunny florida !

My brother and I went. While talking about the trip before hand, I kept telling him that all I want is a chance, and then if I couldn't get one to the boat I just wanted to see how long I could hold on. Dave, my brother, just kept looking at me with this puzzled look. I will never forget the look on his face when that big guy went horizontal six feet in the air and came un-buttoned. He looked like he had just met God.. LOL On the way home, he confessed that he had no idea how difficult Tarpon fishing was and that he thought I was nuts with all my talk before the trip.
