    Question Big Hammer Swimbaits

Have any of you tried the Big Hammer swimbaits that Dave Stewart advised of in his report? Not just at Ky and Barkley but other lakes in Kentucky as well? If so, what sizes and colors are a good starting place? What about jig heads and retrieve styles? I checked out the website and there are a lot of options.

I already know from my multiple trips with Dave and time on Ky Lake how much more accurate his lure selections are over what my personal choices would have been instead . I know that he doesn't put anything in there unless he has had at least 2 positive reports on it.

Dave - Any advice you could give past your review would obviously be appreciated as well.

    Thanks in advance.

So far my experience is with the 5" Big Hammer. We are throwing them with the 1/2 oz head. I highly recommend using some Loc Tite Super Glue applied to the head when using these lures. They are great fish catchers but they are super soft (they are hand poured). My most productive retrieve has been with just slow rolling this lure. I am sure there are probably some others here that have used this lure around Dale Hollow as I have been told by many now that this lure has been a favorite there for a while now.

Jason, in addition to being the softest swimbait I have personally put in my hand, the Big Hammer swimbaits run true, not the side-to-side that you get from alot of swimbaits, especially the ones that come pre-rigged with a nose weight. The 4" and 5" are my personal favorites, can't go wrong with Hitch.

Hard to beat the sexy smelt. Go with the 4" when targeting fish in tight quarters, 5" in open waters......and buy a long set of needle nose because man those fish really swallow that bait. I've had a fish hit one 10 ft away from the boat but only grabbed the tail and came back and POW hammered that thing only 5 ft away at Dale. Big ole 20" Smallie. **** near jerked the rod out of my hands.

Dave certainly sells a lot of baits with his reports; he must be getting commission! Ha ha ha!

The Big Hammer is a great bait on any water. Used it with great success over the 4th of July weekend on KY Lake. Pretty much the only bait I needed for three days straight, and works great in pretty much any part of the water column, and for multiple species. Caught some monster white bass on the 4" version, and they went in the freezer along with some other nice ones we caught.

Great swimbait! I've thrown the BH in 3-5" for the past 4-5 years. Great bait with awesome action. I agree with Dave about using super glue on the head. It's not a must but certainly keeps the bait from slipping... The first time I ever threw the BH I caught one pushing 3 and another pushing 6.

Thanks for all the help, guys.
That is exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
I am interested in trying them out at Rough and Patoka.
Now my search is narrowed and I can confidently purchase some proven sizes and colors that I can attempt to gain confidence with.
I will probably pick a couple of days and take only the BH's to the lake, forcing myself to keep throwing them. Just reading your reviews gives me great confidence in them already, though.
    Thanks again.

Don't do that - find the fish first with what you know works, then swap over to gain the confidence you need.

Setting the hook with the BH is a bit different - you have to let the fish take it and load the rod up before setting the hook, or you'll pull it out of his mouth.

I bought them on recommendation from a friend/guide at Dale Hollow and had no luck there but have used them since and the fish crush them. The only problem I have with them is they are not very effective in weeds due to the open hook.

Zoom Flukes has Flukes with a swim bait tail; I have found these to be very effective also. And the benefit of these is you can rig them texposed with a wide gap weighted hook.

I don't sell any baits...I am in the business of catching fish, not selling baits. I have never received one penny from anyone, including my sponsors for mentioning a lure in my report. The only way a lure gets mentioned in my report on any week is that we have been catching fish on those lures in my boat that week or I have had two or more reports from the folks that I network with that a lure is producing that week. The reason the lures mentioned in my report sell is that they have been and will catch fish.
