    Hello the Board!

    Hi Folks,

I'm new here but definitely not new to fishing.

There's a spot in Indiana called Little Flat Rock. It's a largish creek and awesome for smallmouth. My parents lived near there until I was 3, and up until the time we moved, he would sit me down on one of the flat rocks in that creek and let me fish while he waded for smallmouth.

Fast forward 30 years. Dad still enjoys fishing sometimes, but not as much as he used to. I've got a three-year-old whom I just bought a pole (a Buzz Lightyear thing that lights up -- whatever happened to the old Zebcos that were just functional?) He and his mother come fishing with me. Here lately it's been daily, and he caught his first fish yesterday.

He's not as good about sitting still as I was, but neither is he the type NOT to sit for maybe 1/2 hour (longer if the fish are biting).

Being raised a bass fisherman, I am scientific in the approach. I used to keep a homemade weather station on hand when I was a young teenager. There was a cheap outside thermometer I got someplace, a ribbon tied to a tree, and I went through I don't know how many balloons and soup cans making barometers!

I am pretty much omnipresent on the internet gun boards and make my money by building sights for a certain Russian rifle, but I've not been on fishing fora because there was never any need. However, I've entered a new phase in fishing -- for example, I moved to some of that micro-braided line that claims to be transparent (I don't see it...). I'm ecstatic about how it performs with my bass rod (old Ambassador baitcasting reel with a spinnerbait rod), but I'm not sure how invisible it really is to fish, even with their poor eyesight. I'm thinking a mono leader would be in order, but I'll post the question elsewhere and get things worked out there.

I am looking forward to participating on this board. I know a lot, but technology has advanced that I have a lot more to learn, as well!

    Thank you for having me.

    Regards,

    Josh

Welcome to the site Josh. You made me smile thinking about your Son catching his first fish. It brought back memories.
You sound a bit more scientific than me in your approach to bass fishing so maybe I might learn something from your posts.

    Welcome.

Good thing the Russians are our 'friends' now, or your vocation could raise a few hackles. Apologies, but it creates a couple of questions in my mind.

What kind of rifle, and who buys your sights?

    Hello,

The Mosin-Nagant rifle. The Russians sighted these in for 350 yards or so. In wartime conscripted peasants were told to aim near the waist. A torso hit would be scored out about that far when holding like this.

That's good for fighting wars, but these are being imported by the millions. The American Rifleman wants something a bit more precise for his old Russian rifle, so I remanufacture and modify surplus front sights to allow him to adjust it to his needs.

Just C&R stuff -- I like old things, and in fact, my bass reel is an Abu 5000 from the '60s or '70s. Made in Sweden and still going strong.

    Josh
