Sugar Ridge Pits

Just wondered if anybody fishes the pits in area 6 - tried some over the week-end . There were a couple of trucks at Bass pit so I tried Beaver pit . Weird pit - put in and its small , have to pass through a cut in the north bank then it opens up . Nice looking but loads of the black water skimmers . Just to check I got out a bobber rig and tried small chunks of crawler on a tiny hook . No small bluegill round wood , mmmmm . Fished a power worm caught several 10" bass . Gave up and drove to Barrett pit , looked the same . Left and tried to find some pits listed on the DNR "where to fish" wed site that are just north-east of Lynnville , Long Pit , Timber pit and Hourglass pit but only found a old back road into Interlake that you needed a major 4X4 to go on . Didnt want to tear up my truck . Ended up at Otter - caught 1 legal crappie 8ft deep on a drop . Its just to dam hot to fish past 11: AM !

Thanks for the report. It's way too hot for me to fish this summer. It's the constant heat that seems to be never ending. Come winter I'll be wishing we had some of this heat back. LOL But right now I am thinking about cooler climates.

I went up to Sugar Ridge a few times and the one pit that I checked out had a lot of goose droppings on the dirt road that went along the edge of the pit. I didn't like that at all. Never took the boat up there as I didn't know what the launch ramp was like. I don't have four wheel drive and if the ramps are full of algae my truck slides down into the water and I can't drive back up. Tires just spin and lose all traction. The last time that happened to me at Bluegrass Pit I had to have someone pull my truck out of the water at the ramp. Don't want to have that happen again.

i used to fish bass pit, alot of big gills and some big crappie. caught most of the big gills in the middle of the pit( go left at the T then it snake around take the first right and just fish the middle of the pit slow

Barrett has some very good bass in it. It's hard to fish a place once in the middle of summer though and get an accurate account of what the lake holds. Several of the other pits up there have good bass too.

Most of them have very good bluegill fishing in them when you find them.

Love most of the pits in area 6. Seems to not be as good as they were just a few years ago though. When all that "stuff" got on the submerged trees is beaver it got harder to find the big ones. One thing to think about is the best fishing MOST of the time there is under the trees and with a high seat in a boat it is almost impossible to reach them.
I have a Pelican that allows me to get under them real good. My friend has a boat that the seats are on pedistals and he cannot get under the trees.

Beaver looks like it would be a killer pit with all the wood in the water , the overhang on the bank , and its a nice size for a pit . I also was using my Lowrance X-4 I rigged portable for the johnboat and it showed lots of interesting bottom features so Beaver is on the re-vist list for sure . Thanks for the tip on Bass Pit , my wife's really on my butt lately for some crappie - its the only fish I bring home she will eat . Personally bluegill is my favorite . One question about Bluegrass FWA - we all know you can launch boats at any lake/pit with a ramp , but what about the pits that have signs saying "foot traffic only" ? I have put my boat in several of these pits as its the only way you're going to fish them , with weeds and brush chest high all the way around , ticks , unseen holes , ect . does the DNR expect people to bank fish them ? Scaup pit was one I had tried and its a really nice one . Lots of weeds around the edge , lots of minnows round the bank , the depth was 45 foot in the middle with several nice humps here and there . Caught several dink bass and lost a nice one at the boat . Kinda of a pain to get the truck down there but worth it . Also tried Shoveler pit { a major pain to drive down to } and it also ran around 35-45 foot deep . Weeds out from the bank about 10 yds so hit them hard with the Live Target frog - couple dinks and one 20" fat bass . Love that frog fishin this time of year . The best way to beat the heat Ive found besides night fishin is to go really early - on the water by 5 AM . Fish hard then head home at 10 .
