Is that a spot? Looks like a largemouth to me. Either way its a good catch for a creek.

Got out to Banklick today for about an hour after work. The water was surprisingly down and clear. I was expecting the exact opposite since we had that real bad storm 2 days ago. The creek recovered very quickly though. I started out throwing a Rebel Bumblebug and hooked into a few longear sunfish. Most were pretty fun as they were top water bites, not to mention really pretty fish, But that's not what I'm after. I'm a bass guy. So I decide to swith it up to a tube jig.... And let the games begin! Very quickly landed 3 smallmouth. All between 10-12 inches. Then lost 3 more due to poor hooksets. Then I find a big tree over hanging the bank and with a picture perfect cast, placed my tube jig directly in between the roots. Give it a couple twitches and BOOM! Hooked into this spotty. This thing felt like a whale on my 7 1/2 ft BPS MicroLite rod. Very fun fight! Got her in, snapped a couple pics and back into the creek she went to fight another day. Very next cast I hooked a smallmouth just an inch or two shy of the spotty but really fat. Once again, another awesome fight! I attempted to get a pic of the smallie but as I was digging in my pocket for my phone she wiggled loose from my hand and fell back into the water. By this time it was time to pack it up and head home. 12 fish in one hour makes for a pretty darn good day of fishing!

I use a micro lite for pan fish etc and light tackle you would have to pry that thing out of my dead hands love that rod. Great rod for the money spent.
Just an fyi, it's better to learn to differentiate a spot and a largemouth by the jaw line and dorsal fins than to depend on a patch of teeth on the tongue. It may save you some headache down the road. I have come across largemouth and smallmouth with a tongue patch in ky waters.
I didn't know largemouth and smallmouth could have that tooth patch. Thank you for the heads up. Like I said I thought it was a largemouth at first but the tooth patch on the tongue threw me off. Either way it was a great catch for that little creek.
A fish like that from a creek is a quality catch no matter what, even more so on ultra light tackle.
Ultra lights are tons of fun. Gotta love times like that after a hard day at work.
Note on the "tooth" patch. The KFW changed the regs this year and no longer use that as a sign of a spot vs. LM. The jawline is the primary feature to use according to the new regs. Has caused confusion at the weigh ins at several of our club tournaments. Some KY largemouth have a similar patch.
From looking at the angle of the picture I think it is a spot. The jaw line doesn't appear to go back past the eye and that is my understanding of what the CO's use to differentiate between the two.
Either way, very nice stream fish and I bet it was a blast on that small rod!
Yep....some LMs have tooth patches as well...that is definitely an LM. Rich, what makes you so sure it is a largehead? Not trying to be difficult, but the broken lateral line and the jaw line looks like a spot to me and I am curious what you are seeing that says largemouth.
