I was at rough today and I could see schooling fish under the schools of fry , I dont think they were hybrids because there was too many of them and the sonar return was not big enough to be hybrids but i have to wounder if it was big schools of crappie . I could see flashes of the fish as they were hitting the shad minnows but for all my efforts I could not catch one of them. I used every thing from flukes to small roster tails but not one fish.
School me a little here guy's what gives and how do i catch them What ever they are..

i was there a few weeks ago and there were bass busting on shad everywhere. i was throwing a worm and only caught one on it. however my brother was throwin a crankbait and caught a couple. so i decided to start trolling for them and we caught a decent amount in a few hours. i'm not saying that those were bass but maybe if you try trolling for them you may have a little bit of luck because your bait will stay in the strike zone longer.

I didn't do any trolling . If it was bass , It would be the biggest scholl of them I had ever seen.
I even had live minnows I tried using the smallest split shot 1/16th and a little hook just toss it out there and let it sink slow but no takers. The weather was suckish yesterday and that could of made them a little picky.
It would rain get real humid and then it would clear out and cool down then it would do it all over again.

Just got back from there today and i saw exactly what you were talking about. I could not determine what fish it was but im assuming they were crappie. Caught quite a few bass with a watermelon seed in their area though. The bass were going crazy for some plastic.

It must be crappie because no else is saying anything about it. I will have to watch for people spider rigging for them. I may even try it myself this week. Thanks for the reply and if you figure it out send me a PM and let me know what you did to catch them and I will do the same for you folks.

i'm going down this weekend and crappie fishing. i will try to catch em but it sounds like they're not biting.

The bait fish was in a ball and if I'm right the bigger fish under it is not eating there just following them around until feed time.

Hey Olgreen, i been there a couple of times this week and i caught a ton of small Kentucky bass schooling those 1 1/2 to 2" shad fry, as i was pulling them out the water they were spitting the shad all over my boat deck.
