What is the mass or inertia of a flying carp weighing 20 lbs when it hits you in the fact while your boat is going 25 mph.
The answer should be expresses in Newtons/sq in
LOL Any other scientists, engineers or other geeks out there that like to fish?
Going to school for engineering right now and love to fish!
It has been confirmed by the DNR that the Ohio River will be included in the changes proposed by IDNR. Launching from a Ky ramp won't help. If the CO checks you and your boat is registered in Indiana you will fall under the rule no matter where you launched from. This is not good news. To give you an example yesterday I fished for a couple of hours and had one nice chunk that measured 14 3/4 inches. I also had three dinks. If the new rule goes in to effect I would have to keep the dinks and put the chunk back in the water.
I have no idea where these people come up with these hairbrained ideas. If they would survey the people fishing these rivers and streams they would get a better idea of what we need. As stated before, as a tournament diredtor we are getting bigger and better bags every year. I say work on getting rid of the carp and leave the bass alone.........
Perhaps you should call the IDNR director and talk to him. Explain your thought and see what they say. Call Dan Carnahan at Sugar Ridge Fish & Wildlife Area and see what he has to say. He is the Fishery Biologist for this area. Perhaps he can explain things to you about why they are doing this and what they wish to accomplish.
IDNR does conduct lots of surveys to get first hand information from fishermen. Don you know this as I know you have fished at Bluegrass F&W area when Allen was conducting the IDNR survey. He asked everyone about how many fish they caught and if they were ok with Dan putting Muskie in the pits. Didn't you fill out a survey card or do the verbal survey with him a few times?
I'm not familar with the fishing on the Ohio River as I don't fish the River. It's way too contaminated by industrial and city pollution for my taste. I fish to catch fish for supper and won't eat anything caught from the River if I can help it. I don't like PCB's in my fish oil, if you know what I mean.
Now If I had a bigger boat and was much younger I'd be out there bass fishing and practicing catch and release like the other tournament guys. But I am getting too old and tired to catch for bass all day long. I trolled for bass and crappie yesterday and my right hand is stiff and sore from just holding the rod. I was pulling a deep diving 700 series bandit crank bait with 120Ft of 10 lb test line out. That was the first time I have held a rod like that in two years. It's like doing 100 push ups after not doing any for a few years. Your unused mucles are going to get sore until you get used to doing that.
Anyway I'd recommend you talk to IDNR and see what they have to say.

The Ohio river is not the only flowing waterway in Indiana. It will negatively affect tournament fishing there, but could benefit the other hundreds of waterways that flow throughout the state.
This is not about tourney fishermen wanting to stop changes that may help the majority of rivers and streams in Indiana so they can keep having their tournies. If it is a good idea for rivers and streams(which I think is very debatable) then go ahead and pass it. Tourney fishermen are just asking for a common sense exception for the Ohio River. With such an exception, tourney fishing on the Ohio will continue, businesses in those areas will continue to profit, and enforcement wont turn into a circus. And everyone who supports the measure for small rivers and streams gets to be happy too. Indiana's Ohio River regulations have always been separate from the rest of the state's regs, so why not keep it that way?
A summary from an individual that attended the Spencer meeting:
"Sandra Jensen, the NRC public hearings officer, said that the Ohio River tributary/tournament issue came to light in the last week and that the NRC would attempt to draft new language to address it. What was less certain is how that exception/wording change would delay or even terminate the process of the current proposed rule getting accepted. There's a technical issue wherein a minor change to a new law can be granted late in the process if it's a "natural extension" of the original wording. She did not know if the state Attorney General would view an exception for the Ohio River tribs as a natural extension. "
I would not like to see this get terminated just because of a few tourneys on the Ohio. But I fish about 70 or so streams in Indiana so you can understand where I fall on this. I personally think loss of habitat is a much bigger factor, but this might be a baby step in the right direction. At least if the regulations pass it will be only be 2 fish over 15" leaving on the stringer and not 5 over 15".
How many slot fish make up the percentage of fish weighed in at these tourneys? If it's a large percentage, then what really is the difference between weighing in two over 15/three 11" dinks and weighing in 5 cookie cutter 14" largemouth? If you're bringing in 5 over 15" to the scales then I get it but I don't fish tourneys so a lot of times I don't understand the dynamics.....
